Hi guys,

First I would like to say thank you all for the information on this forum. It has been educational and very helpful.

Based on some advise by Tyty3333 that I have read on a previous post, I have found two stones within my price range that I think look OK in comparison to a pretty bad bunch. I would greatly appreciate your opinion.

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/0.91-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-sku-634039

To me the cut seems OK. Only a slight bow-tie. However, the light through the diamond is average. Is this what is referred to as brilliance? Also, does this stone have 'shoulders' (insert 80's reference)?

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/1.00-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-sku-671804

This stone to me seems to be very brilliant. However, there is no bow-tie at all as the cut design appears to be different from the other example. Are diamonds of this type typically cut using different designs or am I missing something? To me it looks a bit off putting. (but I am sure she will love it haha).

Should I be concerned about the depth of both of these stones? Is the cut of an oval stone graded? I notice GIA does not supply one. Is this because Ovals are a bit hit and miss when it comes to the finished product.

Given the other ovals I found on line I will admit that an oval seems a risky choice.

Also, I was hoping to get some advise on settings. This what I have in mind.

Given these designs what L/W ratio do you think will be pleasing or similar to that in the images?

Any advise or information would be fantastic.

Thankyou to everyone in advance and apologies if I have gone too far with the questions.

best,

I would request asets on those 2. Is there one more that you like that you could throw in the mix? Also ask the gemologist to
evaluate them and tell you what they see. Hopefully these stones are in NY.

Other possible option...
make sure eye-clean, shape isn't as nice as others

That first stone you posted may have ever-so-slight shoulders. Doesnt change the shape to impact the beauty (IMO).

JA options for settings

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/halo/14k-white-gold-pave-halo-and-shank-diamond-engagement-ring-oval-center-item-17437

Find out what the gemologist says, get the asets and post everything for second round of evaluation.

Hi Quwas,
Just saw your post on the Hangout thread requesting help.

No, ovals are not given cut grades. Most fancy cuts are not. There are just too many variables and as you have noticed
different faceting patterns. I believe there are at least 4 different patterns (but would not be surprised if there are more!)
The numbers alone just dont tell us enough. An aset image will show us how well it is reflecting light. Be prepared though,
asets for ovals just arent pretty.

As far as settings go, it is easier to buy the setting from the same vendor you are buying the stone. That is why I posted
a few JA settings. What do you think about those settings?

Thanks Tyty for you help,

The .9 carat stone is no longer available.

Like you, I don't find the shape of the stone that you found to be as good as the other two. I will give this one a miss.

I talked to the online support on JA and they tell me the 1.00 Carat H-VS2 Oval is not in NY. Unfortunately, because of this they cant give me an AEST report.

With regard to a gemologist what should I be asking? Does JA offer this service?

How scarce are good ovals? I have a few months, can I afford to wait around? Prices increase over Christmas I would imagine?

With regard to the settings, I prefer the halo to have a boarder and the pave to be bordered on the shank of the ring also. I feel that this type of settings look cleaner and a bit vintage. The JA settings lack this appeal.

Actually I found that since1910 have a wide range. It might be easier to talk to someone local once I have purchased the stone.

I cant thankyou enough!

That is a nice stone. About the top of my budget. However, I am concerned about the L/W ratio. It looks a bit 'round' to suit the type of setting I am looking at. I am being picky? I think I have looked at too many stones. I am going crazy. haha

With fancies, the more you restrict specific things as dealbreakers, the less and less likely you'll find the perfect stone.

I personally would punt a little on the l/w ratio in favor of cut, but it's not my ring. It is a chunky oval, but that's what's giving you the nice facet arrangement - it's 1.26 l/w which is still quite elongated.

Hey Tyty,

I found another one

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/1.01-carat-f-color-vs2-clarity-sku-611732

I have sent away for a ASET report and the gemologist is getting back to me.

Your thoughts? I like this one

Best

It looks nice...it does have an arrow that goes through the center but it only looks to go gray (versus black) and it does light up
pretty nice. You were smart to put it on hold after the other one was taken. JA will look at the stone and tell you what they
see...color, inclusions, brilliance, etc. You dont need to worry about color or inclusions with this one so it's all about the cut.
Keeping fingers crossed for you. Post aset when you get it.

Hi All,

Just wanted to get some veteran thoughts on this stone

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/0.77-carat-e-color-si1-clarity-sku-726209

with this setting

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagemen...d-pave-halo-diamond-engagement-ring-item-6811

I was initially going for a 1 carat stone but the consultant advised me that this would be virtually appear the same size in a halo setting and had a lot better fire than the one I was interested in

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/oval-cut/1.01-carat-f-color-i1-clarity-sku-614227

The diamond the consultant recommended fits my criteria of Depth, Table and L2W but I'm just concerned that the diamond may appear to small in the setting or on my hopefully soon to be fiancés hand (ring size 6)

Would love to get your feed back on the diamond 726209 and the setting combination. I have already requested the ASET report but would appreciate any comments on this

Thanks

Sugi
