Find me a new car

Hi YT! Doing a new car search can be so much fun. We actually just posted my husbands Tahoe on Craigslist today... he's looking to downsize and go more economical, but also nice. He's considering the Camry Hybrid with the leather interior and all the options.

I drove a convertible BMW 1-series for a year and just traded it in December for a Volvo XC90 (SUV). The BMW was a blast, SO cute and sporty and handled like a dream... But it was TINY, only a 2-door, and really wasn't practical. It also had crappy visibility when the top was up, which in Portland is most of the time. But the feel and and the handling was awesome! I would definitely consider the 3-series if I were you, but coming from an Escalade... you will miss the space!
Also, my DH is convinced he will never own a BMW that is not under warranty... too expensive to repair.

But here's the deal... I LOVE my new Volvo!!! It is beautiful and "cool" and luxurious and roomy! It has all the options, and feels heavy and sturdy to drive. It's awesome!
My friend also just recently bought a Volvo and they got the S80. It's a very sporty and luxurious sedan. It even has heated BACK seats! They got a used one with 40-50k miles on it and paid about $16k. They got a great deal!
Anyway, if you want a sedan, you might look into the Volvo S60 and S80. (The S80 is a little bigger). They run forever and are SO safe!!

I would also consider the Lexus. They run like Toyotas. And as a matter of fact, the new Camrys are super sporty and very nice.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I've got a Subaru Forester Limited and I love it. The gas mileage isn't great--I only get 23 mi/gal because it's all time AWD, but it's the perfect size for me--I'm used to having a big SUV and sitting up higher and I need space in the back/trunk and full size back seats.

I bought it 2 years old, so it was about $5k cheaper than a new stock model and it's got all the nice options.

No matter what you are interested in, I highly suggest checking out CarMax. You can browse their stock online and often times they will transport cars from other dealerships for free so you can look at them and test drive. I also bought the 150,000mi warranty for $1500.

I want a Honda Accord coupe! The one I saw yesterday was only $23,000 and it was a 2012 with only 1,000 miles on it. Someone had bought it, didn't make the first payment and they had to take it back. The only thing is that it was silver and I want a white car.

we own 4 silver cars.silver cars are nice b/c they don't need washing...

This is what DH tells me. He says since I only wash my car every 6 months, (which I disagree!) that if I get a silver car it'll look cleaner longer.

Just chiming in here b/c I'm going to be trading my car in w/in the next few months. My car is silver and it blends into the road, so if you decide on a silver car be sure to drive with the headlights on during the day (unless you get a car with running headlights -then you don't have to think about it). People constantly pull out in front of me. I wondered if it is because my car isn't as visable or if people are just impatient, but when I drive DHs car, it doesn't happen as often.

As far as Subarus go, if you are interested in one, there is a Subaru forum where people talk about the typical issues that they have with their cars. Both DH and I have had our headgaskets replace/rebuilt (whatever it is that they do), my transmission had to be rebuilt, and Subarus burn oil, so you have to be good about getting regular oil changes. They do go forever so if you're looking for a long-term car, you'll get 200K+ miles with it...but, they only get about 20 MPG if they're AWD and require regular tire rotation. They are the type of car you buy, knowing it will need specific things replaced at certain times, but will be a part of the family for 10 years.

I am actually going to trade mine in. It has become too small now that I have two pre-teen boys and I would like to be able to have room for them, a friend for each and my DH and my car is too small. Also, just out of the blue, water started forming on the inside of the windows and we think something happended with a seal and I am not sure what to do. I had hoped to drive it one more year, but now we're thinking two more months.

Silver cars blend into the road huh? Well then I guess that is more of a reason I shouldn't get one! I'm in a huge white in-your-face SUV and people still pull out in front of me and act bewildered when I almost hit them.

I loved my Acura TL. I have an Acura RDX now. It's great having the roomy-ness of a small SUV but it's still peppy. I get in the mid to high 20's MPG with this one. I do miss my TL though. I'll probably go back to a TL once the RDX gets older. This is my 3rd Acura and I just love them. They've all been great cars with very low maintenance and they aren't too expensive to maintain. My hubby has a Lexus 430GS and it's a great car but geeze service is expensive on that thing.

My brother had an RDX and it was easy to drive. I don't really favor small SUVs but his was fun. His brakes lights were interesting tho. When he hit his brakes, they would flash a couple times then fully light up. Some kind of safety feature. Does your's do that?

Since I get MPG in the 50s it always surprises me that people are happy that what they drive gets MPG in the 20s.

I mean it's fine to say they love their vehicle because of this or that, but then I'd expect them to say ... "in spite of" getting MPG in the 20s.

Well Kenny, when you're used to getting 11mpg... and when it says you're getting 13 on the screen, it makes you happy! MPG is a big factor for me right now. I would love a Volt, been hearing a lot of good things about them but they are over budget.

So your hubz and I are in the same boat huh? Two big SUVs and both wanting to downsize and be more economical.

I did hear that a BMW without a warranty is bad because old changes run about 300 dollars each. But then again, you only need to get them once a year. Unlike my Escalade where I gotta go get it every 3k miles or 3 months... I know I'm being such a snob but if I don't go luxury, I know I'm gonna miss things like heated front and rear seats, air conditioned seats, heated steering and the dvd player in the back that I never used but liked knowing it was there...

DH and I are going to Bellevue to look at a 335i xdrive with turbo this coming weekend. He's still really pushing for a BMW, and I guess they are kinda growing on me. I test drove one with a turbo today to see if I would like it before we took the 3 hour long drive to Bellevue and me likey :) After the driving the Escalade, that car shot off like a rocket! Yea, the Escalade has power but that car is heavy! That little 335i could move around corners like magic!

And 23mpg for an SUV! That's awesome!

Volvos are great cars. I had an old one for about 5 years. The only problem I had with mine was how expensive the repairs were! I always took mine to a Volvo master mechanic and he did a great job, and was super helpful with trying to help out less expensive options, but, fact of the matter, you have to take it to a qualified technician--either at a dealership or a master mechanic. Parts were always really expensive--when the transmission on mine went out they wanted $3600 just for the transmission--not including other parts and labor. I ended up having some shady guy rebuild the tranny for $700 (I was in college). It ran for another 3 years until I was rear ended and it was totaled. Overall, they're great cars, but like many of the luxury brands, upkeep is expensive once that warranty is up.

Ugh, people are just idiots! The DMV should seriously consider having people retake their driver's tests every four or eight years. Okay, than it's not just my silver car if it's happening to you in your white SUV. Maybe it's where we live? Not sure of your location... People are just in a hurry and pushy and all that crap. You know, a few weeks ago, A COP ran a stop sign in front of me. While running it, he was staring at me while I was staring back at him wondering what the heck he was doing! lol

Good luck with your vehicle choice. It's so hard to make a decision. I figured out my windows becoming condensed has something to do with whether my moon roof cover is closed or not. I do not want one of those ever again. It's going to cost $700 to replace. :knockout:

I also have a Subaru Forester. I loved it for many years and it's perfect for kids when they're smaller. We for sure have outgrown ours. When I was reading the Subaru car forums, it was amazing how many people were totally dedicated to their Subarus, trading one in for another and/or having cars with hundreds of thousands of miles on them! lol We've taken ours all over WA, BC, ID, & OR. (basically, it's seen the entire PAC NW.) I thought I would get another when car shopping, but now, that my kids and friends are quickly growing taller than me, I realize it isn't going to work anymore... One great part is how well it drives in the snow!

Oh no, does that mean we have all the crazy drivers here in Washington? For me it's usually at a round about. I live in a city that has golfing clubs like crazy and a lot people come here to retire. A lot of elderly people do not know how to use a roundabout! Actually I take that back. Most people don't know how to use it. The one I go through every day is a two laner so people get all confused! They stop in the middle of it. Like complete stop. Stupid.
But then again, I have road rage. I need to be going fast and people need to get out of my way or else...

Whatever you do, if you get a Prius please please don't drive 55 in the left lane.

As for your original question, take a look at the Lexus IS350.
Hahaha personal experience Ascari? I would never ever drive 55 in the left lane!! Left lane is for 90mph! Avg!

And don't you have a Lexus? A really cool one that you got delivered to you work? So awesome!

My previous car was a Honda Accord coup. I loved it! My husband is driving it now - I talked him into letting me get the new car when his died. About a year into getting my new car I asked him if he wanted to trade and I got a hell no! I still steal it every once in a while.

It's a fun car to drive. Mine is the V-6 and it is pretty peppy. You don't realize how fast you are going until you look down at the dash. The gas mileage with the V-6 isn't great. It's usually around 25 mpgs.

I also liked the size. It was substantially bigger than the Civic coup and the back seat isn't bad once you squeeze around the front seat. You can get a lot of the upgrades too. Mine had heated seats, but not air conditioned seats. The one bad thing was the size of the doors. They are longer than regular doors, so you need more space to open them. It fits me and I'm 5'2" and my hubby (6'1"), but my 6'5" dad has some issues with headroom because of the sunroof. That gives him a little less space. Overall, I was really happy with it.

my wife drives a Lexus IS350 the car is powerful but too small for me.

Well, my daily commute inclues about 25 miles of expressway driving each way. The nice thing is that I am always driving opposite of traffic. The bad thing is that there is always someone in the left lane who has absolutely no regard for the people behind him/her. There could be no one in front of that person and 20 cars behind them just trying to drive at the speed that they are comfortable driving at. But that doesn't phase that one person a single bit. So what's the last resort? Dangerous weaving in and out of the right lane because some idiot doesn't have a clue what the left lane is for. Heck, you could be doing 90, but if the person behind you wants to go 100, get out of their way!

As for my car, yes it's a Lexus that is based on the IS platform but is considerably redone underneath. Very very fun car to drive which also feels very safe due to the fact that if feels planted on the road. I had an LS for a week and thought that the ISF which I have felt more comfortable at higher speed than that. But this car is definitely not for everyone. This is why I think the 350 is a much better alternative for 95% of people.

After years of driving a Mercedes wagon, we sold it last year and bought a spanking new Subaru Impreza 2012. OMG love it!!! No offence to anyone but we will never buy a fancy German car again. When we were test-driving cars, we had tried out the Merc GLK350 as well as a BMW x3 (the X3 was awesome) but the two cars that hooked us were the Impreza and the VW tdi. The Impreza is not luxurious per se and adjusting to it after the Merc was weird at first but the quality and reliability is just top-notch. The AWD is great in our nasty Chicago winters... it has great gas mileage and we no longer have to pay for premium fuel. I know you want a luxury car and I am recommending a Subaru but I figured I'd mention it as I'm a Merc fan (my dream car is the Merc G class SUV, omg delicious!) and I never thought I'd like a Subaru but I have never regretted this purchase, so... :))

Thanks! I will ask DH if he is willing to go take a look at the Subaru!

We bought a 2013 Subaru Impreza a couple of months ago, and I love it! it's not a luxury car, but it is a great car.

I'll only buy a white car.
They are safer because they are the most visible of all colors when lighting conditions are poor.
There are lots of older folks on the road at dusk and people with dark tinted windows.

I highly recommend a Lexus RX. It's not huge, I have had mine for 9 years (RX330 in crystal WHITE), and it runs like a dream, and you don't have to pay a ton of money for all the bells and whistles. It is the epitomy of luxury and affordability. Most people can't believe i've driven it for so long, because Lexus vehicles have futuristic modern lines. I think my RX was the most copied SUV style ever. Mazda, Ford, all came out with "lookalikes", but none can compare. I think you can find 2009+ for <30k

DF, I was thinking of getting the IS350C for my next car, but may end up with an SUV again due to my need for the height and size!

Did your wife get the hardtop convertible too? I'd like one in red or white.

To OP: My friend got a certified pre-owned for his wife, and he's a doctor who refuses to buy any car brand new, or over 40K. you can get great pre-owned Lexusessssss, because they re-sell their loaner vehicles after a couple years use. That's another great thing about the brand. anytime you take your car in for service, they give you a loaner for the day!

Fwiw, for a few years I commuted in a white car. The principal called me in one day to ask whether we were going to be buying a new car soon as, in his opinion, the car would be invisible in snow squalls or whiteouts. This is definitely a problem in our northern areas. He then suggested I drive with flashing lights during those conditions. That worked well until it was time to trade it in.

Colour or lack thereof changes with driving conditions in your area. Just saying...

Well, if we want to get scientific, here's a quote from a white paper written by the AAA:

Optometrists note that, for its high visibility, lime yellow should be used by fire and rescue teams, as well as favored by trucks and car buyers.

And just look at this white car! They are all traps. I bet if it was lime yellow it wouldn't end up this way :)

To the OP: if you decide to look at the used ISs, skip the 250 and concentrate on the 350. The 250s had and continue to have relatively significant engine issues. Also, the 350's fuel economy numbers are actually close to the 250. So you gain reliability and lose very little in terms or MPGs.

Another thing to consider, if you can get one that's still within the original Lexus warranty (I think it's 48k miles/4 years) you can purchase an extension of their bumper-to-bumper warranty through 125k miles/8 years from the date of original purchase. This is not a 3rd party offered by places like Carmax or even the 3rd party CPO warranty, but it's directly from Lexus, which means a heck of a lot less hoops to jump through should a problem arise. It's slightly more expensive than a 3rd party one, but well worth it in my opinion. Just one thing to keep in mind is that these warranties can be sold at a different price depending on what dealer you get it from. I ended up getting mine from a Toyota dealer (very reputable source off of the Lexus forum) and the price ended up being significantly less than had I gone through my local Lexus dealer.

Hi car twin! People are CRAZY over subarus! Truth be told, even if I was offered a free Porsche I would have a hard time getting excited about it. I am not a car person at all, and the most thrilling feature a car could possibly offer is to drive itself! I just want a car to be comfortable and easy to drive--I test drove a dozen small SUVs and the Forester was my favorite because it's easy to see out the back window, there are no blind spots, and it handles great in 'weather'. I feel safe and in control when I'm driving.

I'll only buy a white car.
They are safer because they are the most visible of all colors when lighting conditions are poor.
There are lots of older folks on the road at dusk and people with dark tinted windows.

Once again, what you're saying applies a tiny fraction of the time considering all driving conditions of all people.

Just saying.

Why do people think something that applies a tiny fraction of the time trumps something that applies the vast majority of the time?

Just saying.

An exception to a generalization does not negate the generalization, as generally true.
