Hey guys, I was wondering if you could share your experiences on Fiji if you have been there.

We are planning on taking a trip, just the two of us. I must say, I like luxury, so I am looking for a 4.5 - 5* hotel but I don't want to kill my bank account.

We were thinking of staying at one of the big hotels in Denarau Island. I have heard that staying in Nadi itself is just for stopovers, but if you want great beaches, then head to the islands.

My question is, will I be disappointed staying on Denarau? I would prefer to stay at a bigger resort with choice of pools, dining etc. For what I could pay for a 5* hotel on Denarau, I would only get a 3-4 star on the islands. Is it really worth it?

We have stayed in the Whitsundays in QLD, so I know what really great beaches are. Can anyone explain why Fiji has a reputation for some dodgy beaches? I don't really get it.

Also, has anyone been to the Westin, Sheraton, Fiji Beach Resort? Can anyone recommend somewhere that's really worth the money?

Thanks in advance guys!!! You PSers are really a helpful bunch

:o :(( I just checked the rates Kenny - $30000US for a week. Bugger, slightly out of budget :naughty:

EEK! ;(

I know! But it would be an amazing experience, though I am claustrophobic so I don't know how I would go sleeping underwater so to speak. I think I would freak out.

I have some friends who just got back from Le Meridian (I think on Bora Bora?) and they loved it. It was one of the places with little huts on the water and glass floors so they could see the fish swimming under their feet.

Hi Honey,
The quality Fijian beaches vary considerably and many a budget traveller has found themselves stuck in accommodation near mud flats when the tide is out - some of the beaches on the western side are like this. The Coral Coast on the south of the mainland has nice beaches of golden sand, though not the white powdery beaches you might imagine - many of the resorts are situated down there - the advantage is you can restaurant hop at the different resorts.

Check out Wananavu Beach Resort - I have friends in the travel business who love this spot. It's situated on the northern coast, about a 2 hour drive from the airport. and the drive by day let's you see some of the Fijian life other than at the resort.

Hi Honey,

I have been to Fiji twice and absolutely love it there. However, I am not such a fan of Denarau Island. I think I have stayed or eaten at all of the big hotels that are in the main hotel area, the Westin, Radisson etc and they aren't that great. The beach is dark sand and the water is muddy. Plus the hotels are the most family friendly I have ever seen and I don't mean that in a good way (if you don't have kids!). We have always had to stay on Danarau Island on the first and last night of our trip because the flight times meant that we missed the connection to where we were actually staying for the trip and I have never been that impressed.

I think if you could get away from these big hotels and visit somewhere more remote it would be a lot nicer.

p.s. this is where we stayed the first time and it was amazing: http://www.taveuniislandresort.com/
