Hello fellow Pscopers!
I need some input. My FI will be wearing a kilt at our wedding. He will be wearing the National Millenium tartan rather than his family tartan, so that his groomsmen can also wear a kilt. (We gave them the option. Some will be in kilts, some in tuxes.) As his groomsmen obviously don't want to drop hundreds of dollars to buy a tartan that means nothing to them - they will all be renting. ( I personally did not want a variety or tartan patterns as there will already be a mix of tuxes, kilts, etc.)

So. Here is my dilemma. I am struggling with coming up with reasonable color schemes for flowers, invitations, etc. The tartan he has chosen is predominantly red and green, it would be fantastic for a winter wedding! But, our wedding is in July. I considered black dresses for my bridesmaids, but I don't want black to be an integral color in our summer wedding scheme.

So, what I am asking is, if your FI/DH will wear/wore a kilt, how much of a part did the tartan play in your planning process? I am just concerned that if it doesn't play a large enough role, we run the risk of having a major clash of colors and textures. But, I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Also , if anyone has any suggestions - feel free to chime in!
Thanks!

MUNCHKIN!!!! This is SO awesome!!! I was married on Oct 15th and we had a Scottish/Italian wedding and my DH wore a kilt. It will be SOOO much fun and so memorable for your guests!

Let me start out by asking, I assume your FI or you are Scottish? Are you going to be doing a whole Scottish theme?

For our wedding, the tartan was the building block for all other themes and color schemes for the wedding. My husband wore the kilt for the United States Marine Corps. He is Scottish too, so it was a nice way to blend this for him. He wore mini medals too from the service so that helped make it more special for him. His kilt colors were mainly hunter green, then navy, and then two thin stripes, one in red and one in golden yellow. We originally were set for Sept 24th as our date, and I was going to put my girls in navy to pick that color up. Maybe because Sapphire is Sept birthstone but Sept seemed like a "navy" month. heehee But then it had to change to October, and so I thought with the golds and redsa and browns of fall, the hunter green would be smashing against that! And that was the main kilt color so we used that as our main color and accented that with the other colors.

I looked at your tartan and I think either the green or the red would be great since they are about 50/50. However when I think July I think "red", maybe because July's birthstone is ruby (I am such a dork). I would definitely not do black. The tartan is SO fun that it looks so awesome to have everyone "tied" into the tartan colors/pattern.

Only DH wore the kilt, so I wanted to tie in everyone to it somehow. My girls wore hunter green dresses and the guys wore black tuxes with hunter vests and ties. For the girls, I ordered ribbon in the USMC tartan and used that to wrap the stems of their hand tied bouquets. In my bouquet, my florist threaded some of that ribbon in their too to tie me into the theme. For the guys, since they had tuxes and not kilts, we got them USMC tartan pocket squares which looked so great with the green of the vest and also made them match FI. Those are some things you can do. For your groomsmen who are not wearing the kilt, maybe do pocket squares for them in the Millenium tartan.

My girls had red roses. There was a lot of concern about red roses and green dresses being really "Christmasy". But it wasnt at all. It was great since the flowers were red, it matched the red in the tartan ribbon. If you go with green dresses, consider red flowers. If you go with red dresses, consider white flowers. There is white in your FI's kilt so it would look good. I considered white roses but it just didnt fit, so I went with red for them. I had some white in my bouquet (lilies) which of course matched me and also made my bouquet "red white and green" for my Italian heritage

She also put the tartan ribbon in my unity arrangement.

We also incorporated the colors into the decor at the church and reception. Our pew bows were red green yellow and blue with some tartan in the middle. We used those colors in the centerpieces as well. We also had a kilt cake topper! PM me if you want the info. The tartan selection was limited but we found one close to the USMC tartan and it worked well!

We also had tartan save the dates and invitations. They custom made our invites and programs, I wish I would have used the tartan on our programs but forgot. PM me if you want the company who did ours. They were inexpensive too!

One last thing...HIGHLY recommend a bagpiper to play!!!! It was chilling.

Post any questions you have or PM me and I will be glad to help! I have some pics posted under the thread
