BTW, as a former waitress (and I''m sure not the only one)...I have been

at some of the comments made on this thread.
Ahhh...I hope you weren''t
38.gif
at any of my comments Freke! I too only referred to her as some waitress because we didn''t know any details on her. I would''ve said the same things about her credibility regardless of her profession & my doubt about the story wasn''t due to her profession, so I hope you don''t think I was trying to be negative towards waitresses in general!

I have to say that the monologue was NOT funny, but it was more a bash on the Republican party than the entire nation.

luckystar: Do you really expect anything else from Perez? I don't think he is considered to be a journalist. He is a celebrity gossip columnist. He's like a "shock jock" but in drag. It's a bit like thinking Howard Stern is giving us credible facts regarding a politic candidate. It might happen by luck. I personally wouldn't consider anything he said about a candidate as "newsworthy" or enlightening. He is a sensationalist.

Actually, I find it a bit troubling that our youth is so distracted by such trashy gossip about celebrities. The whole celebrity obsession as a whole is distracting our young Americans from educating themselves with real issues. I cringed everytime I used to see my daughter go to his website to see if he had a picture of so and so's baby. I told her "Sheesh, the least you could do is go to People.com, isn't that a little less gossipy?"

Well, even as what I term myself to be, a liberal with Republican fiscal sense, as an AMERICAN I find it nasty. If we were to go there and host a British popular television show, and called the Brits names and insulted them in the name of "fun" I doubt they would be amused.

No, I don''t really expect anything else from Perez, but that''s not to say that I think his comments are acceptable "just because" he''s Perez.
This is a girl in a tough spot, who didn''t ASK to be in the spotlight. All of her friends probably visit Perez''s site and I just think it must be completely humiliating for her (and her boyfriend). As if she isn''t humiliated enough. I also don''t like the message he''s sending--that if you choose to keep your baby you are a sl*t. We don''t know if it was a one night stand, we don''t know if they''ve been dating for years. I just don''t think it is responsible or appropriate to judge her like that...no matter WHO she is.

Unfortunately DFan, I think it would be more of a, "It figures, coming from these arrogant, power hungry, ignorant Americans." Which does seem to be the popular opinion in the rest of the developed world.

*Note: Not my personal view, just a common perception from outside of the USA.

Wouldn''t it be nice to have a viable party in the United States that was "fiscally conservative" and "socially liberal"? It seems as though everyone I talk to refers to themselves in this manner, yet they are forced to choose Democrat or Republican and then in doing so, they are labled by the other party as the enemy. Crrraaaazzzzy, I tell ya, it''s just craziness.

I felt insulted as an AMERICAN as well. It''s acceptable in the eyes of many in the world today to bash America; I just found it shocking that an American channel would allow it so blatantly. The VMAs were pretty much one big promotional event for the channel, but I remember the days when MTV would conduct interviews and open forums with all candidates and provide more even coverage from both sides. It is nothing like that now...this was one instance in which "media bias" cannot be dismissed. It was so blatant and distasteful. His comments were aimed more at Republicans, but when he said that we had to be "punished" and that the UK wouldn''t have trusted Bush with scissors made it obvious that he was calling Americans stupid. If an American host would''ve done that on any European show he/she would''ve been booed off stage for acting "superior." It is clear from all the negative feedback that MTV''s support of Obama tonight has blown up in their faces.

Well her mom put her in the spotlight, and I''m pretty sure she ran it past her family when there was the option of getting the VP nod. So even if she didn''t know that she''d be in the spotlight, her mom did. Chelsea, Jenna and Barbara went through much of the same scrutiny. I can imagine it was expected.

I feel sorry for Bristol. She didn''t ask for any of this, and adolescence is hard enough without being under a microscope-just look at Britney and Jessica (Simpson)--their lives probably would have been very different if they hadn''t be tabloid fodder started when they were teens.

I really don''t think that anyone takes Perez seriously. I don''t even think Perez takes Perez seriously. If we are to believe what has been said, Bristol and her dude were planning on getting married for quite some time before the baby news broke out. Regardless, even though she doesn''t deserve this attention, she had to know it was just a matter of time.

Trillionaire, my point was that Americans are GLOBALLY perceived to be rough necks, and ill bred illiterates and lots of other countries think of us as having a cowboy mentality and so they lump us all together as being the same rough and tumble ignorant wild folks. America is viewed as this wild vast frontier, and we are treated as little more than lunatics who go around shooting at anyone and anything. I am NOT pro Palin in terms of some of her views. She is a woman, and a mom, and we have that in common. But that is about it right now, except that I would like to start getting some oil from our own country and would like to think there is a way to do so safely without harm to the ecosystem...I can dream. But on MANY issues she is not representative of me, not at all. I do not view the US in totality as the Wild West, but I respect those states in which hunting and fishing are part of their culture. I have a choice to live my life differently and so I do. But calling us names and insinuating we are all a bunch of hellions with no couth is another. We are the butt of many jokes world wide I hate to say.

My point was that this British man was ridiculing us and basing his ridicule in part on the notion held by MANY other countries that we are not bright or elegant or sophisticated, hence we even elected a retarded cowboy to lead us. Like, oh what a shock that retarded Americans who are all like cowboys in the way they think and act elected a retarded cowboy to run their country. And I am NOT trying to insult cowboys, I do not know any and have no reason to think anything of them that is negative. But I have relatives in Europe and Canada and have traveled extensively enough to know that as a whole Americans are not viewed in such a great light, except when we can be of use.

BTW, when were you a Trojan? I graduated from there in 1989...

I graduated in ''04! :-D

I LOVE my alma mater!!!

I tend to think it''s indicative of the reason behind the saying, one shouldn''t discuss sex, religion or politics at parties.

That would pretty much leave me out of the conversation at the dinner table.

I have to admit, it''s often left me with less to say.

I''m a little surprised that Perez Hilton has such standing in flyover country. Most angelenos consider him several rungs lower than the National Enquirer. He''s somewhat of a joke even amongst the other queens. He''s viewed strictly as a wannabee in LA.

If Michelle Obama was part of a cessionist party, end of story.

She was never a part of that party. I thought that was posted here? That story was corrected by the author.

This interchange between Pricescope members took place a while back, but I have been reading the political threads sparingly in an effort to cultivate inner peace ;-).

Trillionaire apparently pointed out that Michelle Obama (the candidate's spouse) was criticized for daring to criticize the United States, while Todd Palin (the candidate's spouse) was not even criticized for trying to SECEDE from the United States. That does sound like a double standard to me, a standard in which Democrats get blamed for being un-American because they put the Constitution above that piece of cloth that is the American flag, but Republicans can do anything they please because while they ignore the Constitution, they wrap themselves in that cloth! (Michelle Obama questions some of the practices of the Bush administration, as do many thoughtful Americans who feel that it has undermined the United States Constitution as well as the reputation of the United States as a world power.)

The story retracted by, "The New York Times" was that Sarah Palin belonged to the secessionist party. Her husband, however, did belong to that secessionist party and Sarah Palin addressed a meeting of that party.

I understand that (which is why I posted the article), but I thought by mentioning this she was trying to imply that Sarah Palin was a member of the group, which it was proven she was not. If I misunderstood, I am sorry.
