Long story short I’ve been out looking at every oval I can find to replace the one I've got and the conclusion that I’m coming to is the cut feature (the wide flat facets on the ends, similar to the bow tie in the middle) is present to some degree in every stone I see. In stones over 3 cts it is very apparent (to my eyes anyway), so I’m exploring the possibility of other shapes including (gasp!) rounds.

One jeweler is calling a few rounds in for me to view on Tuesday, including a 4.58 ct that he says is fabulous (and he’s had a pretty good eye so far). But at what point does a round get “too big?” Blasphemy, I know, but there must be a size where they just aren’t pretty any more or that they just don’t look real… ?

How would I set it? If I did pears on the sides ala Kirstydarling what is a good proportion ratio? What about curved trillions? Would a 3-5 ct round with side stones just look ridiculous on a size 4.75 finger?

And can I really go to an I or a J w/o seeing color? My I colored 3 ct oval does indeed show some color in certain light as much as I hate to admit it. I have eternity band that is made up of fourteen .35 ct G and H stones so I want to be able to wear the new ring with it. How low can I go and still be able to wear them together? I had a K color on my hand today that honestly looked just fine with the eternity band, but it was a small stone so I don’t know how a 3/4/5 ct would look in a lower color.

Sorry for so many questions but the idea of a big round kinda blind-sided me and I need a little hand holding right now, LOL!

(Mara, want to come to Chicago for a weekend and help me look at stones?!?)

i can't wait to hear what you think of the rounds! 4.58!!!!

make sure that baby is well cut

the beauty of a well cut round is that it does really hide color with all of that blinding sparkle. if your 'i' color oval did not bother you, i can guaratee a well cut round will look so icy white. you could go down to i/j (gia/ags graded) to wear with your eternity band and not notice a difference.
can't wait to hear more about it!

You can probably get away with the color in a round moreso than an oval, but at that sheer SIZE....I don''t know if you can go as low as a J. Have never had the pleasure of seeing a stone that big in person.

Good heavens woman are you trying to break a record or possibly your finger with a stone that large???

You gotta share pictures of that one!

what is Dancing Fire's rules? up to your ring size in a round and one size larger in a fancy or something like that

. I agree, that will be one HUGE round. I can't wait to hear what you think..

found it: dancing fire's rules: for e-ring....(center stone only)
you can go up to a 2.5 rb if your ring size is 3.5 or....4ct if your ring size is 5; 5ct if size 6 etc, etc. and for fancy cuts you can go up to your ring size.

of course, we've all seen Kristydarlings "throw the rules out the window" gorgeous ring

That''s just crazy talk! A lot of them face up bigger than rounds...!!! You''d be able to call spaceships back from space! Or maybe I''m thinking about my finger. LOL

HOW many carats in that round??? HOLY *&%^

Um... as long as your throwing shapes out there.... it doesn''t have the same spread... but how about a nice cushion? Would really love to see another HUGE cushion on here.

I think when a round gets to be large (6 carats and up, depending on finger size) it can look like a headlight if it is not well cut and set right. I have seen some stunners and then I have seen some frozen spit and tooo big is not a pretty sight (yes, I, Diamondfan, am saying that)...but again, show me an 8 carat stunner with the right setting and I WILL eat my words...

OK kids, let''s be calm!!!

I am NOT saying that the 4.58 round is necessarily the answer, I''m just exploring the *possiblity* of a round in general. But honestly that sounds a little big even to me, size whore that I am. Realistically I would probably be more in the 3-4 ct range. And I am a bit scared of the color in a stone that size regardless of the shape because I really do want it to look OK with the smaller stones of my eternity band (which are F/G by the way [I just looked at the appraisal] and not G/H as I said earlier).

I will just have to shop around and see what I find (not to mention what I can *afford*!).

Rules were made to be broken, except for this one:

If your jaw drops when you see it, buy it.
