Hey, CS experts! I was just browsing for heat-treated rubies (not in the immediate market), and was wondering what your thoughts were on this stone? Would you consider it high of quality to grace an engagement ring (I wouldn't put it in one...just wondering!). Thanks!
My first custom project has my brain in overdrive for future projects! PS has got me hooked!

Hey there! :wavey: I'm not a fan of gemsny in general, and that ruby looks very "dull" and kind of "dark" to my eye.

Here's an example of ones from our "recommended vendors" that look gorgeous (to my eye)
https://www.mastercutgems.com/Products-251-Ruby_and_Sapphire/8528-GFTP_-_AGL_Natural_Ruby_1_07_ct-Gem.php?FromPage=2

Here are others from another trusted vendor that I much prefer to the one you linked in terms of color and quality
http://www.litnon.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=10961
http://www.litnon.com/index.php?page=viewgem&id=10328

And here's a larger one (sold already). The cut is unusual but the color looks great.

anyway--all of that was to say that I think you should look through the recommended vendor list to see what they have before looking elsewhere. Welcome to CS, I can personally vouch that once you get started with colored stones it's hard to stop

ETA: gemfix is another trusted vendor and they have many to choose from. They are known to be pricer than others here (perhaps because they own a physical store in California), but have good quality. http://gemfix.com/gem-category/ruby

I love that gemfix one! Fortunately (unfortunately?), this is a *want* and not a *need*! I'm just keeping my eyes peeled for a 6.5-6.7 round ruby to go in an old setting! I figured this one was too good to be true, but thought I'd give it a shot! Was hoping the meh color was more due to my computer screen. C'est la vie! The search continues!

I find the "retail price" on the gemsny page to be amazing, and not in a good way.

A case of making up a random large number to make the context of the list price more appealing. OMG what a deal! There's an interesting book (whose name escapes me at the moment) on the psychology of persuasion, especially in a sales context, that this brings to mind.

But now I'm totally off topic :)

Ahh, heres the book:

Honestly I couldn't agree more. It is hard to explain their pricing structure, unless you accept that they are exploiting people's ignorance by massively marking items up to make them look valuable.

Have you checked out spectralgems? They sometimes have lovely rubies

I'll keep an eye out on Spectral and some of the other recommended vendors. Any thoughts on the quality of Perlman's? They seem to have a lot of ruby inventory. Again, this is for a want and not a need and needs to me 6.5-6.7mm (for an old setting). So, hopefully some day, my ideal ruby will come along! I just have to be vigilant enough to find it when it does!

I have not personally purchased anything from them. But I have seen them help a lot of people build stunning rings. They actually sell gem2000's inventory (gem2000 is a massive dealer which prefers to deal with people in the trade, rather than sell directly to the end consumer). But they seem to put a lot of effort and time into helping people find the right stone and setting. And can probably help you make sure everything has a agl cert. The end results are always lovely.

I am no specialist ...yet...working on it.... but is that not a price more appropriate for a heat-only ruby?
This one is as treated as they get, isn't it? I think I saw such rubies on offer for a few dollars in Bangkok, they looked OK, red, not sparkly but OK and were rubies with this flux-dada-heated and they cost $5 a piece and the sellers offered to get reports (if you paid for them) saying 'natural ruby with heat plus some substance'. Missing something?

Nobody? Did I say something silly?

This 'TE3' seems the worst type of treatment in the GIA report and yet they ask 3000 USD per carat, not to speak of the 'retail' price'? Am I naive or is this cheating? The $5 rubies from Bangkok for 3000? And they are in NY, not in Nigeria?

Ohm, I was planning to become a regular here, but I feel a bit foolish now.

Can somebody help please?

What is the reason for being ignored. Please chose:

1. I broke some rule, like don't bash vendors or say 'cheating'
2. Too big a topic
3. Too old a topic
4. Already discussed too many times
5. So wrong can't be helped
6. Newcomers are always given a hard time

Please give me feed-back or I will be too ashamed to post again.

No, I actually agree with you. The ruby is definitely not Vs1, and at least from the picture is not impressive in the least.
I also wonder to what degree it is heat only versus heat with some kind of treatment. There are other threads that mention ugl is more of an appraisal than report, and doesn't really comment whether there is diffusion or flux treatment.

7) You must be new to online forums and you're too sensitive; whether people respond to you or not is *not* about you....

Most people don't even read the entire thread usually, they just read the opening post and comment (though I'm not guilty of this  )

This is a forum where people that have a second to spare or are bored at work or whatever come to to read, ogle and chat. There are plenty of posts that are left ignored that's the life of participating in online forums. No one is specifically ignoring you... why on earth people sometimes think this is not understandable to me. I read your first post here and moved on to another thread... I didn't really give it more then 1 second of thought beyond what I read.... and I'm pretty sure that's the case for most people.

So I'll say again please don't be so sensitive (and what is with the attempt at emotional blackmail?! ) and if you are, online forums probably aren't for you.

+1 Wow! You'll need to relax if you want to be successful here. You might also appreciate knowing that its not considered good etiquette to hijack someone else's thread for your own purposes.

OK.Ok. I get it.
I will have a thicker skin. I'm not the center of the universe. A web-forum is not a Danish village.
Thanks for helping me out.
