I just bought ( it can be returned) a 2.02 Ct, round,H, VS2, excellent cut, Excellent polish, Excellent Symmetry, No culet, No flour.
and has a HCA score 1.1

From face up, i could not see anyimperfections. The stone just looks beautiful!!

From side view however, if you keep teh stone against bright light, i can see a small crack like thing (black) running from the gridle towards the bottom (not all the way). I have never seen how a feather looks like so not sure if this is, but looking at the GIA certificate they have shown a feather in that area. SO i am assuming that this is a feather.

My question is that, it was my understanding that in a Vs2 stone, the inclusions/feathers/etc could not be seen by naked eye. How is that i am able to see a crack/feather from the side view of the stone? Should i return the stone??

Thanks!

you can see it on the side. that is not "visible."

It''s rare, but sometimes you can see a feather in a VS2. Should you return it...does it bother you? You can probaby have the stone set so that the feather is covered by a prong, but some just want a "mind clean" stone. Only you can answer whether it''s going to bother you.

is this only for VS2 graded stones or is this possble to be seen even by naked eye in VS1 and VVS2 stones from side views?

The standard for grading clarity is from a face-up view, not a side view. From the side it''s like looking through a window pane, and you can see inclusions more clearly than when viewing the stone face up.

The great skill of cutters is to position inclusions so they do not show from the face up position. When they get this right - the inclusions are almost always more evident from the back and the side.

If you are having the diamond set - then ask the stone is postioned so you can not see it. If it is already set and it bothers you, then ask for the stone to be turned so you cant see it.

Or consider it an easy way that you can always ID your diamond.

You can also use it as an eye test - I bet you $100 you will not be able to see it in 10 or 15 years time

I agree about it being an easy way for id purposes. I bought a 2.45ct E VS2 that had a similar issue. From the top it looked perfect but from the side if it was hit with the right light and you were looking at it from a few inches away you could see a very slight white line near the girdle. At first I was very concerned and considered returning it thinking a VS2 shouldn''t have any noticeable inclusions. Now however any time we have the ring cleaned or other work done (my fiancee needed a ring guard), we can immediately recognize it as ours which gives us peace of mind. If it will bother you than go ahead and return it, but my guess is that in a month or two you won''t ever notice it except when you want to see it.
