hi all, so I am back and if you read my earlier thread, I was contemplating two stones. 3.3 j si2 vs 3.5 k si1 and due to travel, it took some delay in pulling the trigger. when I finally decided on the j because I don't think I would be happy with a k color, it was gone.
Now I am looking at this 3.5j si2. I don't mind that I can see some inclusions, I just wonder about the feather at 12o'clock.
Here is the link to the stone. What do you think? Should I be concerned that it can be a durability issue? I have called the vendor and they are having their gemologist take a look but I would really appreciate the input of this helpful community. I know this stone is not cut as amazing as the 3.3 j I saw earlier but I like the size, color and price combination of this one. I just need advise on the feather situation. Thanks all!

I think you'll have to have a gemologist examine it and answer that question. I personally would not consider an SI2 with a primary feather inclusion since they are basically cracks, but that may be the reason the stone is eyeclean. So I guess there are trade-offs, and eyeclean SI2's in stones that size will be hard to find.

Thank you Diamondseeker. I am reading pintobean threads now about her unicorn diamond with feather trying to rationalize it.

I'd second DS' recommendation that you get their gemologist to take a look and give their professional opinion. Personally, I'd be worried as it looks like it extends all the way up to the girdle and thus it could pose a durability issue in the future.

Thank you and yes, I will have the gemologist check this but during the mean time, I am curious to see how many people own diamonds with feather on girdle. Did it break? Obviously it is not ideal but I'd like to hear those who own, what are your thoughts? I have heard 2 no's on this... anymore no's or yes? Pros and cons? Or just cons on this one?

So the vendor came back saying that since the stone is overseas, they cannot bring back to have gemologist look at it... implying I would have to buy it first. I have attached the image of the stone. What are your thoughts?

It looks like a great diamond. There are several trade members that have reassured buyers about feathers near girdles in si2. If it was a significant durability risk, it'd be downgraded to I. I don't have time to reference it at the moment but personally I think this is a great find and I'd be happy with it.

Each diamond should be assessed to it's own merit and a gemologist review should certainly help.

Yes, I have also read that if the feather were that severe, it would've caused damage during the cutting/polishing process which is a lot more rigorous than setting the diamond. Of course, if you were to hit the diamond with enough force on the exact spot where the feathers are, something could potentially happen. The image, price and size is great though...so just like PintoBean found her unicorn (and I've seen it in person both set and unset and it's gorgeous and 100% eyeclean!!), this could be your unicorn!!

AC117, thank you!
I am also hoping pintobean read this to comment on her thought process.

I'm here! :wavey:
While my diamond was posted on JA's site, I did not purchase it through JA because the reps you speak with don't get their hands on the diamond to thoroughly review it with their own eyes. This is why I opted to have Yekutiel at IDJ call it in and vet it with his own eyes and equipment. I was also lucky enough to have ac117 with her eagle eyes take a look too.

If this diamond is located in the US, IDJ and other recommended PS vendors like WF, BGD, GOG etc would be able to review it and let you know if the inclusions affect the diamond's structural stability.

If it is a diamond located abroad, it is worth buying it and having it shipped to an independent appraiser for evaluation.

Thanks PB. The diamond is abroad so I would have to buy it first. Based on what you see so far, do you recommend?

It looks like a great candidate for the size and price!!!! Have you checked the PS resources tab for an independent appraiser near you?

PB, I have not and thanks for your comment.

I agree with DS2006 that I don't want to see feather as a primary inclusion at SI2. However, it is not the only inclusion. By itself, it may or may not be the SI2 grade setter. I have seen many SI1 stones with a similar type and size feather inclusion. I would buy it take it to an appraisal.
