I'm trying to gather ideas for a solitaire setting under $1000 that is clean, classic, simple, and elegant. I'd much prefer platinum because of it's durability, security, and heft, but if cost is restrictive I'd consider white gold or even palladium. I really can't stand clunky prongs. Diamond is from BG (.85 ct H), and I'd prefer to buy from them, but I'd consider going elsewhere if you have some nice ideas!

From BG, I really like Grace and X-prong, but they are slightly above budget.. maybe I have to stretch it...

If you are hoping to stay with BG I can recommend the Ashleigh setting. I have seen it in real life as it was named after my daughter when she purchased it last year :)) it is around your budget in platinum.

I have owned the Melanie setting in platinum and that is very pretty too. Both settings definitely let the diamond take centre stage.

If the diamond is coming from BG, then buy the setting from BG. If buying from WF, buy the setting from WF. I would really not buy a diamond from one and then send it to their direct competitor to be set. I really wouldn't. Not to mention the extra shipping and setting expenses that you will incur.

From BG, I like:

I limited my links to items $1250 or less in platinum. Some people have said the Grace sits really low and it limits the wedding bands that will work somewhat.
