Hi all - newbie here,

I've found a diamond I am very keen on, however I have no previous experience with Fancy colours or the Radiant shape and am wondering if the diamond I am considering is a 'good' one.

The diamond I am looking at is a 1 carat Fancy Light Yellow, Radiant cut with VS clarity, measuring 7.18 x 5.38 x 3.6. That is all the information I have on it so far - it has not been graded, but I have the option to have it sent to GIA for $150 which I will definitely be requesting.

I know with coloured diamonds and fancy shapes that each diamond is a case-by-case basis and it's a matter of viewing the diamond to see if it fits your ideals, however as we're buying offline, I want to make sure at least the 'specs' are favourable.

I have seen pictures of the stone (which I have attached) as well as a video.

Can anyone give me any advice or their opinion of the stone?

Thanks.

You say the diamond has not been graded, but then provide grading info. Who says it's fancy light yellow, VS clarity and 1ct? Can/should you trust their grade? There is a big difference in price between the different grades. If you are happy with the price offer to buy the diamond and pay for the grading only if they come back as advertised.

I guess when I said it hadn't been graded I meant it doesn't have an official GIA grading report - the company who is selling the diamond has graded it, though at this stage there is no report by someone I would trust to be '100%' accurate (i.e. GIA).

The price on the stone is $3500 USD.

And therein lies the problem; without a GIA lab report, how do you know if it is truly a Fancy Light and therefore paying the right price for the diamond? Can you make the sale contingent upon the stone coming back with a GIA lab report confirming that it is indeed a Fancy Light yellow diamond that is untreated, with even colouration and VS clarity?

Well I like it. Like the color. I'd learn more about getting it certed. Are you out that if it comes back like a SI2 Y?

I'd never consider a colored diamond over, say, $500 without a report from GIA.

If it comes back with lower grades, especially if GIA grades it on their D-Z scale, the price must go down.

This makes this a messy transaction so I'd move on.
I'd definitely not pay for the GIA report.

Diamond sellers are very smart.
There's probably a good a reason they did not send it to GIA.

I think you've gotten some very good advice here.
If one was was looking for stone in a category that was very rare, then it might make sense to enter into an agreement where thy send the stone off to GIA, and the sale is contingent on the result.

BUT- one carat Fancy Light Yellow Radiant is not a particularly rare category.....
My advice to a consumer would be to stick with known quantities.
