So...Is this a good idea? I can''t tell anymore.

I am toying with the thought of setting .60ct.-ish stones in bezel-set leverback mountings and came across this:

http://www.solomonbrothers.com/Search/JewelrySearchDetails.asp?sSKU=93292

Does the pave make it too fancy for every day wear? Will it look ..."costumey"? Any idea how much "oomph" (in mm, that is) a plain bezel adds anyway?

Whaddya think?

Thanks!

bezel definitely adds big oomph...i love those settings...i secretly covet a big pair of diamonds in leverbacks but they''d need to be humungo diamonds to really stand on their own in leverbacks IMO...so doing a bezel or a pave bezel like this would be a great way to beef up a pair of smaller stones.

in terms of DAILY wear...i don''t think i would necessarily wear pave bezel earrings for daily wear...but definitely if i was dressing up for work or going out at night etc. i don''t think that it makes them look costumey also if the stones are well-cut they will still be blazing and pick up all the extra sparkles from the pave.

i like them!!! i may have to save this for future thought as well. i have a pair of tahitian pearls i am still trying to find a way to set, and i love the leverback idea but wanted something a bit different than the typical pearl leverback setting....and a diamond bezel may be kind of an interesting thought...i don''t know if i could use THESE earrings necessarily but hmm..giving me ideas.

Hey Mara,

Thanks for the feedback.

Lemme ask you this (I know it''s going to be a personal preference, thing, but I''d like your opinion): Would you do the fancy-schmancy leverback thing that I posted or just do a traditional bezel-set stud?

I could do a nice martini setting, but (long story short) I''m ditching my crappy 1.60 studs for something with higher quality and am worried about losing some of the size impact I had with my larger, albeit not-so-great, studs. (Not sure how much of a difference .5mm would be anyway.) That''s why I was thinking bezel. I actually saw a bezel leverback situation at Costco (I know! gasp!), which started me on that whole angle. And thus the solomon bros. mounting.

BTW, I think a setting like the one posted would look smashing with pearls. Not that I''m fanning the flames of jewelry addiction, or anything!

hehehe....well i am the worst person to ask because i have studs and i just never wear them!! i am more a fashion earring kinda gal...aka the $40 summery crystal dangly kinda earrings that go with whatever i am wearing. i wear my studs sometimes but i'm kinda bored with them! i love the idea of big leverbacks, but i'm not sure how often i'd really wear those either. so it just comes down to what your style is and what YOU would wear more. leverbacks i think are a bit more 'fashion forward' than the traditional stud...and i think they can be as versatile as the traditional stud as well. the stud is a total 'classic' look which i don't think you can ever go WRONG with. i would wear a leverback as much as i'd wear a stud i think. but it just depends on personal style....is why also it's taken me so long to get these pearls set because even when i set them, i will probably only wear them once in a while! but i really want to add some diamonds to them, we bought the pearls on our honeymoon in tahiti so they have special meaning and i'd love to get them into something really lovely that i can keep forever and then pass down etc. even if i don't wear it as much myself.

I scoped out solomon to see what else Parade Designs, the maker of that earring mounting, has to offer and saw some fabu drop-set pave mountings that could be lovely with your pearls:

Food for thought, anyway! I''m sure however you decide to set them, they''ll be stunning. And what an incredible honeymoon keepsake!

I totally hear what you''re saying about the classic appeal of the studs vs. the dressier bezel/pave thing. Truth is, I want BOTH. No, actually I want it all. An e-ring upgrade, a pendant, a wonderful sapphire ring, and, and, and.

Soooooooooo...I''ll have to make up my mind. You''ve given me lots of fodder, though, for a decision, which I really appreciate.

Oh, and let us know what you decide to do with those pearls, ''kay? Sounds like a great project. Plus, I get to live vicariously that way.

I also found some lovely halo stud type settings. Hmmmm...So many options!

kathleen:

I LOVE leverback earrings....but I noticed that the ones you posted are ''fixed''.

I''ve got this theory that if the diamond dangles, it will sparkle more than a stud would. (could be wrong, of course...just my theory

Here''s more food for thought. This has been my latest earring obsession: tiny studs with removable drops. I''ve always hated traditional "earring jackets"...for some reason they''ve always looked like...well...jackets!

Then I saw these at DBL. The studs are only .50tcw, but as you can see from the closeup there is an "L" bend in the detachable piece which really makes the drop (in this case yellow pear) look like it belongs with the stud.

I''ve got several pairs of gemstones that are unmounted and homeless....soooo tempted.....

Hi Widget!

That sounds like a good theory to me! I''m very pro-sparkle.

Those drop-jacket thingies are very cool. I like the versatility that something like that lends. I might have to take a peek on the DBL website.

These are beautiful. I was thinking of doing the same thing to my studs. Helps from loosing them with that back. And I would wear them everyday...

HI:

I reset my 1.10ctw studs into lever-backs and loved them! Altho with mine, there were no other accompanying diamonds (as your first picture shows), I found the lever back very comfortable (no studs to poke when talking on phone) and had the appearance of a "drop", a style I prefer. Good luck!

cheers--Sharon

Oh I would wear them everyday for sure! They are lovely (imagine sapphires in there

Widget, love your earings and the idea of changing thier look with accessories.....

Kathleen, can I ask how to find the earing mountings miinus the stone on that site. what do I click on? I can''t seem to find the mountings only

As the afternoon wore on, I started convincing myself that I should be more "practical" and go with some lovely bezel-set studs instead. After reading your comments, however, this style is back on the top of my list.

Super helpful to hear that you like your drop leverbacks, CanukGal. I couldn''t find any examples on pricescope or much talk about them, either, so glad to hear that you''re fond of yours.

Eva, I''m not sure why the link isn''t working. I''m not very tech savvy. It should take you to just the mountings, no center stone. If the link fails you, I think if you search the solomon site by entering the "Parade Designs", earrings and diamond pave, they''ll pop up. Hope that works for you!

Thanks again for the input, everyone!
