Hi everyone!

I was in Diamonds International today, tried on a beauty of a ring, but feel I might have been told a few furphys with regard to ancy coloured diamonds?

The rock I tried on was a 2.25 cushion cut fancy yellow, P1 clarity diamond. The jeweller told me that overseas fancy yellow diamonds (I''m in Australia) don''t get given a colour grading, although argyle diamonds do. He also said that they don''t generally get graded by labs such as GIA, AGS.

Is this true? I love the stone, but at $15k for the ring (it has a few white diamonds of G colour in the setting too) I really want to be sure I''m getting a nice diamond, you know? Performance-wise it wasn''t ffloor-me antastic in the store lighting, but it wasn''t bad.

Any help appreciated!!

I dont know what furphys mean..., but BS is more the words I would use!!!

P1 = Imperfect 1 (I1)
So how is the jeweler giving you a color grade???
Fancy colored Diamonds DO "generally" get graded by labs such as GIA (AGS I think are not grading fancy colors..., but I might be wrong...)

Is it true???

NO!!! And I would strongly suggest for you to take your business elsewhere!

Good luck

PS..., If I am not mistaken..., Garry H deals with Fancy colored Diamonds and is located Down Under..., perfect!

I didn''t think it was true, especially after they took my details and told me they''d ring the supplier of the diamond (who is apparently in Africa) and get back to me with a certificate, or at least the dimensions of the stone.

I am actually hunting down a warmer coloured pear cut diamond, but having mucho trouble in Oz. I''ve contacted Holloway diamonds but they told me they don''t deal in diamonds above H colour.

Thing is, I fell in love with that sparkler at DI!! But I don''t think I could buy it knowing that they''ve lied to my face. Argh!!! I hate liars!!

Why don''t you purchase from an overseas vendor if you are having trouble here in Oz. I live in Melbourne and had my ering shipped from WF in America. I was so blown away by their service, quality and prices that I am planning on getting our wedding bands from there too. There are many trusted vendors who will be honest with you and help you find a well cut, gorgeous stone that will be exactly what you are looking for.

I am definitely considering doing just that, but my fiance is very wary of purchasing online, especially such a large transaction. I have been working him up to big transactions over the net by buying him fishing gear from eBay, haha!

Back on topic, is it normal for fancy coloured stones to have such a low clarity grade?

It depends on what you mean by "normal". Fancy coloured diamonds are comparatively rare, and the body colour may help masking some of the inclusions, so people are generally a little more lenient on how "low clarity" they are willing to purchase, especially for the rarer colours (blue, green, pink); red diamonds are so rare that clarity is not an issue.

Apart from budget considerations, there's no reason why you should go for an I1 stone in light yellow (U-V) through to fancy yellow; there's plenty of them with higher clarity.

ETA: same applies to "warm whites" - not sure what you meant when you said that you are looking for a "warmer colour" - not icy white, or decidedly yellow?

Word of advise. Always buy fancy natural colored diamonds with GIA certificate unless you know the seller personally and trust him/her. They are really beautiful and like looking at nature''s work of art.

Precisely. For some reason, I''m really drawn to the creaminess of the sparkles in stones that aren''t classed as ''yellow'', but aren''t pure ''white''. Does that make sense? Ahhhh!

Am definitely turned off the ring at Diamonds International. For $15k, I think fiance and I can do ALOT better than an I1/P1 stone - and I won''t have to beg quite so hard if we stick to our $10k budget too. ;)

PS: Thanks everyone for your help!

Take a look at the two stores mentioned above, and Good Old Gold has some K-O graded stones too.

One good thing about K - Z colour stones is that they have some of the lowest prices per carat. You should be able to find a nice ring for $10k and something fabulous for $15...

i know what you mean about wanting a creamy colored diamond. my center in my er is an L colored stone supplied by diamondsbylauren, i love it!

Stick to your guns - it makes total sense. I don''t have one yet, but I saw some warm-colored diamonds that just looked like captured candlelight. They sparkled beautifully b/c the cut was good.

How do you plan to set the stone?

Ohhhhh I love this place.

I really hope I can convince the boy to buy online, although the jeweller at the local B&M store I spoke to is just lovely, and very knowledgeable. He used to buy for Hardy Bros, some of the Aussie vendors may know him - Brian Bretherton?

I am tossing up between a shoulder solitaire and an a halo setting. I am absolutely in love with the halo setting, but I do worry that perhaps in 5 years time when I''ve grown up a bit it might seems like a very young/trendy sort of setting (I''m 23). I really like how using whiter stones in the halo bring out the creaminess of lower coloured stones, too.

We''ll see. Still have to find the perfect pear! Thanks again for everyone''s help. :)
