Does anyone know what kind of appraisal Tiffany uses? I''m looking to buy a 1.12 ct, H, VS2, solitaire platinum ring from a private owner and he has a Gemological Appraisal Laboratory of America certificate with the ring. Is that a legitimate Tiffany''s appraisal? I''m not sure how Tiffany''s do their appraisals or certificates. The ring has a "Tiffany & CO PT 950" stamp on the inside, but I am not a specialist so I''m not sure whether it is real or fake. He is selling it to me for $2900 and so if it is authentic, then I would definitely get it. Please help?! I''ve attached the certificate and will be posting some pics. What do you think?

Here's one pic of the ring. Sorry, lighting isn't great.

Have you tried to call the grading agency to verify with them if this is real (it seems it) and if they can verify. According to my sister's ring (Tiffany's, but please don't hate ME!), she had a Tiffany's certificate that came along with it, in a blue envelope as well. Do they have that? I think Tiffany's provides their own Gemological reports on the stones they sell. Anyone?

What worries me is tht this stone is set, and only so much grading can be done on a set stone, so it may not be 100%, but I can bet it's fairly close.

Also a thought, appraisals always seem to be done higher than atual paid value. Not sure why, but MANY NYC appraisers do this, either thinking they help the client (in case of stolen or lost rings) or if they get something out of Insurance companies like business...again this is done a lot in NYC...

Tiffany grades it's own diamonds and issue a "guaranetee" for them (unlike the reports of the labs). I think there is some note on this on their website (somewhere on the E-ring page, if I remember right). This is not it... and the stamp on the ring... oh well, anyone can do that!

This does not mean the piece does not have the look! You'll probably be better of making your own CC Tiffany (there are some very, very close matches out there) and at least know all appropriate details about the stone... etc.

That may be a fifth of the price, but charity is rarely done in the form of give-away diamond rings. Even if it is knowck-off and the specs are somewhat right, it ios still strange. No idea what is going on with the piec, but the only way I woudl dare consider such transaction is with the intermediation of an appraiser. it sounds like the added cost will not offset the bargain much!

If something seems to good to be true, it usually is. I would avoid that ring, it's too questionable. Plus, I would rather have a brand new ring of similar quality that was designed especially for me, than a used ring with the Tiffany name on it. Especially since the used ring may or may not be authentic... You could get something brand new and replicate that ring -- you wouldn't have to wonder if it was authentic or not -- why take the chance?

Just my two cents. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hey, I've seen Tiffany & Co. rings hawked on eBay with both the original documents from Tiffany and ones that do not have documents from Tiffany like those "GAL" appraisals. It usually looks like the people selling real cheap Tiffany rings don't have the original paperwork including receipt nor do they have a lot of feedback if any. Yeah, the prices look great, but someone always told me to run away and do it fast if the deal looked fishy. I can't tell you about how many fishy posting Tiffany & Co. rings that I have seen on eBay. There are just way too many. Some people will post a diamond ring with the colour of "J" or worse and with a "SI1" or below for clarity. They'll say that it comes with a "Tiffany & Co." blue box, and using that disclaimer I think they try to trick the buyer into thinking that it is an original "Tiffany & Co" item. Which by the way, you can buy "Tiffany & Co." blue boxes also on eBay. From my visits to both Tiffany's store and website, I know that they do not sell diamonds with "J" or worse colours nor do they sell "SI1" or below for clarity. Buyer beware. I would only purchase a highly priced item like that when after viewing it in person the item and taking it to the "Tiffany & Co" store for an in-house appraisal of said item. Tiffany & Co. will have their own people/experts let you know if it is the real item or not for a fee. Anybody can have a jeweler etch words or hallmarks into a ring, and anybody can have their diamond swapped into another setting. Perhaps the Tiffany band is real, but the diamond may be another story. Good luck. I hope you find that special diamond ring that you are looking for.

I have two comments on this subject.

The appraisal posted is a very good example of a very very poor appraisal.

When you purchase a Tiffay ring from anyone other than Tiffany, you cannot be sure, nor can the appraiser be sure that the setting and the diamond are both from Tiffany. I could buy a Tiffany ring change out the diamond with one of lower quality and sell it the next day as a Tiffany ring. Buyer beware!

Hi,

I have been reading this board for several months. As soon as I saw your question, I immediately registered. Are you refering to ebay item no. 2688560877? This same tiffany & co 1.12 carat solitaire has been listed almost a dozen times on e-bay each with a different ebay id with 0 feedback. If this is the same one, and I believe it is, ebay has also pulled this auction each and every time before its completion. You may want to contact someone at ebay to verify this.

It looks like the same ring/stone. Beware!

This is the OP's update.
