$7000 gets me:

Round Brilliant
1.18ct
Measure: 6.78-6.82 x 4.15mm
Depth: 61%
Table: 57%
Girdle: thin to slightly thick, faceted
Culet: None
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
VS2
G
Fluorescence: None

How does that sound? Looks like a nice stone, but I''m not a trained eye. From what I''ve seen online, looks like a fair price. I''m getting good, professional service from a Manhattan jeweler - not street level. Any thoughts are appreciated...thanks!

Very fair price.

It would be nice if you could get the crown/pavilion height/angle information on the stone. That way you could better judge the optical performance of the stone by inputting it in the HCA Cut Advisor or having one of the guys run it through their DiamCalc software.

That information can be obtained by your jeweler by running it through a Sarin or Megascope machine, or at the least getting a gemologist's assessment of the crown height and pavilion depth. The Sarin is the most accurate in obtaining angles, which is the best data for HCA and DiamCalc input.

It's a reasonable request, when you're considering shelling out seven thousand dollars.

Seems like a good price for a nice stone. Is it certified? My concern would be that you make sure you are indeed buying a g/vs stone.

Yup, it's GIA certified. Question - if crown and pavillion angle are important measurements to determine light output, why isn't it a part of GIA reports? How important is light output when considering the price and overall quality of the stone? Also, what exactly does AGS0 mean? Thanks!

That's the $64 million dollar question that everybody who knows anything about cut is wondering. If you look at the 60/60 article on PriceScope's tutorial it will give you an idea of how important that information is.

Light output is what it's all about, isn't it? You can read all about it at the PriceScope tutorial- basic and advanced info.

The two grading systems which measure the technical aspects of cut are the AGA system and the AGS system. You can find information on both at the following sites.

Well, exactly my point. Earlier, you replied that $7k for the stone I described sounded pretty fair. But if I find out that crown and pavillion angles are out of whack and the light output isn't that great, then $7k could easily turn out to be not that great of a price...right? So I guess my question should have been - how much will poor (or great) light output affect the price of the stone that I described? Could that stone just as easily turn into a $5k or $9k stone?

Something would really have to be out of whack to produce fluctuations like that in value. It's not very likely. The overall figures you quoted look good, which puts us in a reasonable ballpark as to the fairness of the $7,000 quote on the stone.

The crown and pavilion information would allow a fine tuning process in regards to the value, but most importantly, would help you judge how the stone performs optically. With all facts in hand, you are in a good position to decide of the stone is worthy of your money.
