Have you ever checked your "Other" message folder in FB? It's where messages go that are sent from people you don't know. I checked mine today and saw I had received three messages in the past week or so from some random lady. She is insisting I live in Alabama and am having an affair with her husband. She says she knows the town where I live and is sending her PI there to investigate. Investigate away, honey, I'm a long way from Alabama.

I did do a google search with my name and "Alabama" and there is someone with my name who lives in the town she mentioned. But I'm definitely not that girl.

Wow... that's crazy!

I might be the last person on the planet without a FB account and every time I hear something wacky like this I am glad!

This is kind of scary! People search people online thinking they have found a person but it's another individual! Yikes! Be sure to save those messages in case she ends up becoming more aggressive.

I didn't realize there is an "other" box because I only look at my messages when a regular one pops up. My other has a bunch of junk spam from various companies I have "liked" in the past.

Yes, definitely will save them. I went back and forth with her a few times but she obviously wasn't believing me, so I told her I wouldn't be responding to any more messages. Luckily I live on the other side of the country, so I'm not worried. Oh, and I'm married to a cop, so that helps :) My profile is totally blocked as well, and nothing comes up on google under my married name (well, not the real me anyway).

But seriously, how about doing some research before going around accusing people?

Have you ever googled your name? I've tried mine and my email addresses and there are A LOT of other people that pop up. I didn't realize someone else's twitter account is one of my email addresses. The person has the same initials, so they come up when I do a search. I also would get friend requests from people I didn't know and one of them comes up as a relative of mine when I did a search. I have no idea who the person is!

Yes, it's best to keep profile blocked. Every time I start to wonder if I'm being too paranoid, I hear of something like what you're describing and am glad I have my info/pictures limited.

Yes! My maiden name got a lot of hits (and all were me so it was a pretty rare combination)...my married name has a lot but not many are me. What's really scary is in my county you can do a search of property records which means you can get anyone's address (as well as see how much they paid for their house). It's all online.

Very interesting. I didn't even know that was there. I got 5 people that messaged me about the venue I had my wedding at asking advice and to share my experiences. I had 3 messages asking my about my engagement ring (a picture of it is posted on the Tacori FB page). And the last one I had was asking if I was selling my wedding dress lol. I'm gonna check that more often. I feel bad that I wasn't able to help out those people that asked about the venue - I totally would have shared my experience with them :(

Where do you find the 'other' messages?

Click the messages tab, then click "see all" and next to that you will see "other"

Click on your messages and choose 'see all'

You can see the option there....I only found out about this folder the other day. I think because it looks faded out you don't notice it.

I just found messages from 2011 that I didn't know existed. lol! ooops. Oh well! Do I respond 2 years later?

It really is stuff like this that is making me want to ditch FB altogether. The lack of total control over who can see my stuff bugs me. If they're not on my friends list, I don't want to be found. I do that on purpose. I don't want my profile pic visible. I don't want ANYTHING visible. I want to not exist if you're not on my friend's list. Why is that so hard for the FB people to get. They embed ads and other crap all over my page already. That's as "monetized" as it needs to be.

Creepy. Which is why I'm glad I'm the 3rd person in the world not on FB.

edited... I complained about something, but decided that won't resolve anything. Just took care of it...

wow- I'd never even noticed the "other" before. But I don't use FB messaging all that often. So I went and looked at my "other" messages and 95% of it was various Tango Festivals soliciting me to buy tickets to the event.

Make that 6.

We should just put big signs around our necks that say "we're over 40".

But I suspect we will have the last laugh.

When I checked the other folder last month (for the first time) there was a year old message asking about my wedding photographer. I also felt bad that I hadn't responded. Dumb folder.

For those of you concerned about getting messaged from complete randos, there is a privacy setting that only people you are actually "friends" with can message you.

Add my husband as #7. He has never understood the purpose of it.

I like it. I think FB is what you make of it. It can be filled with drama if thats how you choose to use it. It can be a great way to stay connected with certain people. It can be just for fun. It can be a good place to keep photos organized (if you don't want anyone seeing the album, there is an option for that). It can be a fun place to look back on memories. I have had FB since it first became available to my college in 2005. I LOVE looking back at photos...it brings back so many good, happy memories.

There was a time in my life that I had a VERY controlling boyfriend that used FB as a way to control me too. At that time, I did not use it much mainly because it was the perfect place for my crazy ex to stir up problems.

What I find most interesting though, is that the people who use FB to air dirty laundry or to try to stir the pot most is the older crowd. Not what I ever really expected.

what is the secret code to become a PS/FB member? ...

None. No codes involved.

IIRC they took it away "as a convenience". Ive been tryin to find a workaround forever.

Mark me person number whatever with no FB account. I had a relative try to talk me into one about four years ago, so I did a little digging. I found an article from an independent weekly. The writer had spent some time with a former FB employee and they had spilled their guts. The article was absolutely chilling. This person said FB didn't give a shit about anyone's privacy. What they were trying to build/market/sell was the world's largest database. I can understand what I do online is not just my business when I'm at work, but when I'm at home it's nobody's business. (And yes, I understand the difference between looking at 500 pairs of shoes and kiddie **** or plotting to blow up city hall.) I just don't understand why some people think everyone cares about all the minutia in their lives. I think there's going to be a lot of people in the future who regret having an account.

It's there, in your privacy settings.

If someone contacts me on fb who I don't want to correspond with... I don't reply. Easy peasy. And I have my security setting way up high and the only profile info I volunteer is my name and my avatar. Someone could explore my friend list, I suppose... not sure I like that idea either... maybe I should explore ways to lock that down to non-friends... hmmm. :wink2:

FB is what you make of it. I use it largely to stay in touch with a small group of acquaintances and to have some fun. But then, I'm over 40 so no one expects me to live my life on FB for them! :D
