i'm currently using proactiv but want to change. i wanted to wait till after the wedding to do so, just in case something crazy happened to my skin. so here i am, looking for some great amazing product to try. i've tried philosophy, murad, bioelements, and a whole line of others. i'm wondering if i should go back to something basic. i have breakout-type skin that also gets dry. i currently don't moisturize. and really, i'm just using the proactiv face scrub-type wash. none of the other products right now.

what is your favorite facial cleansers/systems/routines? and why? and what type of skin do you have?

I love the St. Ives Apricot Scrub. I have normal/dry skin that needs to be exfoliated every day or I break out...I really like this scrub, and it''s super cheap.

well....thanks to my dear friend moremoremore, i am hooked on biologique products. i use the vip02 cleanser and the p50 lotion. i''m not sure the cleanser is necessary but i can''t live without the lotion. my face is very dry on my cheeks but oily in the t-zone and i never could find a system that would keep my face balanced for both. i would either get excessivly dry or overly oily. the biologique seriously balances my skin. it feels perfect. i don''t have breakouts anymore, which is amazing. truly. i am so happy to have clear skin. i am totally a drugstore products kind of gal but the biologique has done wonders for my face and i can''t live without it now.

I use cetaphil soap with the cetaphil lotion to moisturize, and use that St. Ives apricot scrub as well. I have mildly acne prone skin, and this works for me very well. I would also suggest some type of cleansing mask as well to use once or twice a week... I use a noxema mask, that also helps. All these can be bought at the drugstore and cetaphil lotion is awesome for a daily moisturizer even if you don''t use the same soap.

My skin is prone to acne (and I''m in my early 40''s...what''s up with that). I use tea tree oil facial cleanser from trader Joe''s (or whole foods), St. Ives Apricot scrub and any moisturizer with sunscreen. I''ve tried a lot of the ''expensive'' lines and every time I break out. The tea tree oil facial soap is the best. My daughter is 12 and uses it too...it helps with the breakouts. Her dermatologist recommends that she use Cetaphil Anti-bacterial soap, Witch Hazel for a toner, and Cetaphil moisturizer.

The tea tree oil scrub from The Body Shop is awesome! I use that too. I use the apricot scrub every morning in the shower, as it keeps the skin on my face really soft.

the p50 lotion only comes in 3 varieties. i get the one for sensitive skin (p50w) because my skin is very particular!
i choose the cleanser because it specifically states ''for acne prone or troubled skin''. that was me!

i order them from http://paullabrecque.com/ they are awesome to work with.

I have skin that is simialr to yours jcrow. I''ve used Proactive, but, it tends to make my skin too dry. Now I''m using the plain old Neutrogena bar soap. It''s working well.

I use the scrub in the shower in the morning to exfoliate, and then use EITHER the cetaphil or tea tree oil scrub after that when I am getting ready. I then wash my face before I go to bed with the tea tree oil or cetaphil, and I use lotion after I wash my face each time. My skin is not as problematic as it used to be, but the cetaphil works ALL the time, and the tea tree oil just smells so good and kind of tingles on my face so I use that maybe three times a week in place of the cetaphil. I like to switch it up because it seems to help my face a little. No matter what you choose to use to wash your face, I would definitely recommend the cetaphil lotion because that stuff works wonders for your skin and moisturization.

i used to use the body shops vitamin c line. i worked there in college, but am now upset with them. silly, i know, but the owner sold the company to lancome and it just goes against what i liked about them.

i now use the sonya dakar face care line. she is an awesome facialist in LA, i''ve only been once, cuz they are mad sales ladies there, but you can buy the products at barneys. I have the mudlavendar wash in the shower and the soy wash at the sink. I seriously LOVE her products!

I am about to try the kinerase line.

I too have tried all things around over the years, Lazlo, Lancome, Clinique, La Prairie, La Mer, Cetaphil, Basis, Kiehls, C.O. Bigelow, Chantecaille, Murad, SK 11, Bobbi Brown, Perscriptives, Estee Lauder...

What worked a while back does not work as well now. Skin changes as we age and so sometimes we need to change our routine a bit. If you try something new you are supposed to give it 30 days, which is one cellular cycle, before you see if like it or not...and if it is really working.

Murad has done wonders for my skin!

I had a serious case of adult acne in my late 20's, and resolved to ditch my drugstore skin care and get some good stuff. I debated between proactiv, and the murad acne kit. I ended up going with Murad as I also wanted to begin getting facials on a regular basis, and lived near the Murad medical spa in Manhattan Beach, CA.

The products in the murad acne kit did the job and my skin was clear in about 2-3 weeks. But i noticed that my skin was getting dried out. One of the gals at the spa recommended I switch from the acne (clarifying) cleanser to something a bit more gentler. She also recommended I use one of the AHA (exfoliating) cleansers every once in awhile to get rid of dead skin cells. I know it sounds crazy, but I use 3 different facial cleansers depending on my skin is doing. I mostly use the refreshing skin cleanser, but also break out the AHA cleanser a couple of times a week. I used the clarifying cleanser up until a couple of months ago when I ran out and tried one I picked up at Trader Joes (i posted about it in Ginger's drugstore finds thread) My face tends to get oilier in the summer, and was desperate and happened to be at TJ's. It works great!

The second step in my skincare regimen is a treatment. I began by using the Murad acne stuff, but eventually switched to something a bit more moisturizing. I think it's called moisturizing acne treatment gel I can't live without it.

Last step is the moisurizer. I still use the one from the acne kit. I think it's called perfect skin lotion or something like that.

I dab on the spot treatment when I need it, and now I'm looking into incorporating an eye cream into my regimen. I hit 35 a few months ago, the little lines around my eyes are more pronounced (ugh). I get breakouts every once in awhile, but overall I'm happy with my skin. Oh yeah, I try to get a facial every other month. I alternate between the acne clarifying facial, and the AHA exfoliating one.

That's my plan. Hope this info helps!

I''m also a big fan of the Murad Acne Complex kit. My skin totally freaked last month, I switched to Murad, and my skin looks so much better! I''m very happy with it and plan to stick to it, especially with a wedding coming up in a month!

I''ve been seeing a dermatologist for years for acne and roscaea. She swears that Cetaphil (or the cheap immitations work just fine). For years, I didn''t listen and tried most cleansers on the market. Finally, I gave in and tried her suggestion and it works. It doesn''t make my face feel super clean, but it has helped my skin tremendously. The dermatologist also advised against using any scrubs. She said it actually makes the acne worse. She was right on that too. I stopped using the apricot scrub and switched to Cetaphil and my skin has been just fine. I use the Cetaphil moisturizer too but just at night. It''s too greasy for every day wear for me. I just saw the dermatologist last week and she said my skin looks great and now I''ll only need to go back if I need refills on the prescriptions (I use Differin and Noritate topicals).

jcrow,

for several months before my wedding I would get monthly facials. I asked my asthetician to recommend some products. She said washing your face before bed, using a mild scrub, and moisturizer are all very important....You might want to get a facial and see what they suggest for your skin type. And of course you can always try things out at the drugstore.

For my day time moisturizer I use Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15
http://www.kiehls.com/_us/_en/catalog/product.aspx?CatCode=AXE_Face&TopCat=F2_With_SPF&prdcode=352

for my face wash...they sell it at my day spa...Cellex C Betaplex Gentle Foaming Clenser...I started using it in February and I love it.
http://www.cellex-c.com/end_user/beta/NS-bgfc.html

My DH uses Purpose face wash which is very mild, and great for people with senstive skin

I use the Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub in the shower every morning...I was told that if I can feel it, then its too harsh on my skin...
http://www.biore.com/usa/products/productInfo.asp?productId=4

and for my nightcream...this is my big ticket item at ~$50 but I love it and it has a light citrus sent...Sothys Noctuelle

I just use plain Neutrogena Fresh Foaming cleanser. I''ve tried other cleansers and scrubs, but this is the one that I keep coming back to. I have pretty normal, non-acne-prone skin, thanks to Accutane treatment 4 years ago (prior to that, I was seriously oily and had constant breakouts). I like that it''s non-fragrant, foamy, comes in a convenient pump bottle, and is cheap (~$6 a bottle).

One thing that helps me with the dryness in the winter is only washing my face once a day. I usually just rinse it with water in the shower in the morning, then wash it with cleanser when I go to bed. I use the cetaphil moisturizer in the winter in tiny amounts, and I use an oil of olay sunscreen moisturizer during the summer that is lighter.

This is very low maintenance, but my skin is a lot better than it was on a lot of the more complicated, expensive regimes that I tried. And it''s so much simpler in the morning! A little moisturizer and a little aquaphor ointment on my lips, and I''m ready to go.

I feel like a broken record after the lip balm and eye cream threads, but Mary Kay. I was really skeptical - it''s so.... pink and girly! And I didn''t care for supporting the pushy over-the-top MK saleswoman image. But a friend had a MK facial party with a woman who''s been selling MK for 18 years and is incredibly sweet and completely no-pressure, and I liked the skincare. And then I kept going to facials and kept liking the skincare, so I gave in and bought their Miracle Set about a month ago. They have normal to dry and combination to oily formulas, they are all formulated for sensitive skin (the 18-year career lady has NEVER had someone develop a reaction from using their products), and my face has never been as smooth and soft. It also stops acne in its tracks - you know when you feel a pimple coming in, it''s all swollen and painful right before they erupt? Well, they don''t erupt for me anymore. It''s reduced the color of the dark acne scars on my chin. Even the basic skincare set includes cleanser, moisturizer, and foundation, and for a former twice-a-year make-up gal, I''m actually using the foundation every day (I bought the tinted moisturizer actually, very light coverage, and have tried the cream-to-powder too). I have used clinique (moisturizers), oil of olay, neutrogena, St Ives (including apricot scrub), noxzema, clearasil, biore, all the drugstore brands, and I have never liked or consistently used another skincare system as long as I''ve liked and been using the MK stuff. One of my coworkers started using the Basic Set a few months ago and all of her acne scars are reduced too. Her skin used to be really red and irritated looking, and now it''s "normal" colored.
I have sensitive but pretty typical combination skin. I typically break out (used to!) about once or twice a month, not very acne prone.

Whatever you do, make sure to use a moisturizer with at least SPF 15 every day! Stop those wrinkles and age spots in their tracks, not to mention skin cancer.

hey jcrow.

i started a similar thread a little while back, but couldn''t seem to come across it this morning...

i had blissfully clear skin until i was about 26. now, i have the face of a pubescent teen
14.gif
. i''m still trying to find that magic cleaner/face care routine...

I was using proactiv, but that never really solved the problem. someone suggested the tea tree oil from the body shop. i got and liked the facial cleanser and also still use their blotting papers (extremely helpful in warm weather). in the beginning, i noticed a big improvement with the tea tree oil, but it still didn''t solve the issue completely. i just did some research and ordered a couple of products from "Lush" They get rave reviews all the time for nearly all their products from cleansers, shampoos, moisturizers, etc. they don''t test on animals and apparently the products smell divine. i got something called fresh farmacy and herbalism. if you go to their site, they have some message boards that discuss peoples'' success and/or disappointment with the various products. also, they have a store in NOLA...

good luck!

you can also find lots of reviews for all kinds of products on makeup alley. but really, i think you just have to try the products and see for yourself. i''m just going to incorporate one new product for a couple of weeks and see my skin''s reaction.

darn adult acne.
