I have a question about eye clean. The diamond I am looking is not 100% eye clean. It is a VS2 with a cloud close to the edge of the table. I was told it is a level 1. Can someone explain what level 1 means? Should I be concern?

What''s your concern? If it''s not eyeclean, it''s not eyeclean. If you don''t mind, great. If you do, move on.

What type of cert does it have?

As I understand it there are degrees within each level. For example my diamond is an F but it''s a high F... and my VS1 was a step away from VVS2 but because of the location of a small needle it was VS. But-- none of that really matters. If it''s not eye-clean and you want eye-clean don''t let any of that confuse you. Move on to another stone. I saw a spectaculae Dream Cut SI1 where I honestly could NOT see the inclusion after 5 minutes of trying under the scope. Yor is probably a VS2 instead of an SI because the inclusion in located off to the edge.

Or the cert is from a lab that''s loose with their ratings... or the jeweler is showing you the wrong stone. (Just speculating).

Hmm that''s interesting, it''s a VS2 but it''s not eye clean? Not that a VS2 is GUARANTEED eye-clean but if it was graded by a reputable lab that seems a little surprising. Is it a GIA or AGS stone? Can you see a magnified picture of it?

Not sure what Level 1 means...but if this potential non-eye-cleanliness would bother you, I would keep looking, there are many stones out there, so you don''t have to settle especially if you are paying for the VS2 clarity...find one that IS eye-clean from all angles. Good luck!

Level 1?? I hope the experts can chime in because I''ve never heard of that terminology before??

I am new at this so I don''t really understand all the diamond terminology. It is a VS2 graded by GIA. I am confused as to why a VS2 is not eye clean. Blue Nile did tell me it will be very hard to tell and they are also confused as to why it is rated VS2. Blue Nile won''t give me a magnified picture of the stone. I guess this may have been graded wrong or very close to eye clean.

Okay here is a Q for you...

Why would you want to give your hard earned $$ to someone who won''t give you a magnified picture of inclusions? Especially when they expect you to just accept that the diamond is a GIA VS2 and not eye-clean. Which is not unheard of but it''s a little curious.

There are lots of vendors online who WILL give you that additional information (many of them are here on PS)...and that is the kind of mental security blanket I want when I am dropping coin through the internet for a high priced item. Have you considered other options??

What Mara said.

In know you''re new to this, but so were all of us at one point. You''re smart enough to know there is something strange about a VS with a visible inclusion... so do more research, you''re obviously starting to get it... and in the process of doing so look at other vendors.

Those are just a few of the one people here have happily purchased diamonds from in the past.

Mara - Yeah, it is silly that they won''t give me a magnified picture. I have looked on whiteflash and goodoldgold too.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/1423/ - Not sure why there is a black mark on the hearts I can see the inclusion but it is magnified, so I am not sure how it will look in person. I guess it should be so small that I probably can''t see it. Do you know why there is a black mark on the hearts?

As far as I know clarity on certs is never rated as level one or two etc. Nor is it rated as a very good VS1, bad VS2 etc. These terms are subjective and depend on whether you are buying or selling!
