just ask the setter to place it under a prong.

It is usually the sign of a skillde cutter who leaves a tiny bit of the original rough on 1 place under the girdle. They are not a problem if it is small and they are seldom ever visible from above.

Should not effect clarity and its scale will be marked on the cert plot in green.

Can't agree with either of you...Garry, I think you are describing a "natural".

An extra facet is one which is added, without regard to the cutting pattern, for a variety of reasons, is usually small, and if under the girdle and/or not visible face up at 10x is not considered a blemish. It does not affect clarity.

It is indicated on the plot in black.

An extra facet should not be confused with an "added facet", which is added into the existing cutting pattern in a symmetrical fashion, and is never considered a blemish.

I stand corrected Gary

Of course you are right - I am describoing a "natural" that is often taken for an extra facet and is described in green.

Usually they are left when they are relatively smooth.
If frosted a cutter might polish them = facet not natural and as you say - marked as black

But they are very hard to polish (octahedral plane).

Extra facets are more likely added to remove a small inclusion.
