Extra facet or chip?

My fiance recently purchase a diamond rated: G SI3, and we received the mini certificate. We have not requested the full certificate yet. On the picture of the diamond where they mark the clarity I noticed a black line on the bottom of the stone that goes down from the edge then comes back up to the edge. Is this an extra facet, chip or what? It isn''t very noticable when looking at the diamond, but I am concerned that this may cause a chip, etc. I haven''t yet had it appraised, but plan to do so. Can anyone set my mind at ease?

I'm partly reposting a review I gave on your purchase on a different thread...

One not about diamondsafe.com... I'm sure they are a legit and great company, BUT they use EGL Israel certs... Which are pretty worthless... Now, if you got a 1.29 G/SI 3 (or G/I 1 from GIA) it's a very nie deal , but be very careful of EGL Israel's extremely liberal grading. They're often off by 2 grades in color and clarity. So, if you got a properly graded diamond, then it could be a great bargain as it's priced like an EGL stone but would check out will with GIA, but if you got an I/I 1-2 then it's not so great. Please don't panic, but I just want you to know the truth before it's too late. Diamondsafe.com seems to have a great return policy, should you need it. But I really hope you won't have to.

But with all our recomendations, I'm sure you'll bring the stone to an appraiser in order to verify the grades given by EGL.
Each stone should be evaluated in order to give appropriate info, but this is just a general guideline.

That said, a G/SI 3 can be a great value as it should be very whiteand inclusions SHOULD not be very distracting.
On a plot of an EGL cert, the black line is an extra facet. Don't panic.

Tell us more about the diamond... Specs, specs, it's all about specs!

Are you sure that the "extra facet" doesn't cause anything negative? How do they mark on the certificate if there was a chip. How would that show up?

Oh my God, I hope you have not been offended by my comment about the EGL report. If it's so, I'm truly sorry. I'm not English so sometimes I don't use the best expressions.

Flour: None That's **VERY** good, because if there's some fluorescence, usually EGL Israel is off on color rating by several grades.
Color: G Again, since there's no fluorescence it could be pretty accurate, but I don't know and can't tell without seeing it.
Clarity: SI3 This is not GIA recognised. I would think it would get an I 1 from the GIA (or P 1 from HRD or IGI here in Europe).
Graining: Nil Fine
Dim.: 7.01-6.94 x 4.31 mm There's a very little devitation, so that's fine.
Depth: 61.8 Very Good

Table: 58 EGL uses rounded #s, so the table could be 57.5% as well as 58.4%, but it still is within parameters for an excellent cut.
Crown: 14% Same here. 13.5% or 14.4%? But Again, it still is a nice crown height.
Pavillion: 43% Ditto. But still ideal.

Girdle: Medium, Faceted That's the average, but since it's listed as medium it should not give any problem
Polish: Good to Very Good nice!
Symmetry: Very Good very nice!
Cutlet: None Fine as well
"Tolkowsky Ideal Cut" Very long story about the 'Tolkowsky Ideal Cut'... Let's say that litterally it means nothing, but it's used to describe a diamond with a cut ranging from excellent to good. In this case, the cut is very nice in my opinion.

Just made a few tries with the HCA... Using #'s you provided, it gets a rare 1.1 EX/EX/EX/VG. Using the best possible numbers it gets about 1, and using the worse possible numbers it gets a 2. So, you're looking at a very nice cut.
As I already told you, G/SI 3 is a very nice combo. No nasty inclusions and nice white color.

Are you sure that the "extra facet" doesn't cause anything negative? Yes I'm sure, unless it's very, very, very large. Since your stone is rated very good in symmetry, it has to be pretty small and negligible. How do they mark on the certificate if there was a chip. A chip is marked in red. Just like an inclusion but it would be marked on the very side, in your case. How would that show up? You mean to your eye? Just like a chip would. Irregular.

Are you sure you aren't seeing a natural? It would be plotted in green.

I didn't take offense to the certificate being "worthless", but now I know to be careful and take into consideration possible overstatements on the EGL reports.

Thank you for all the information about the diamond, you have been a great help. I feel a little better about what I have. In the end, it is imperfect but still beautiful, just like our relationship.

I am sure that the marking is black, not green. The one thing that the lady did comment on was a feather near the edge of the diamond. She made sure that the setting was placed to go over top of the feather.

Why I worry so much about chipping is that I inherited my great-grandmothers .65 carat old european cut ring, and found that a chip had occured on the edge just under the girdle. That makes me worry that the same thing might happen if I accidently hit my diamond on any hard surfaces.

Your diamond is not imperfect. Here in europe we use oique' opposed to imperfect. It's just much better. Calling an expensive item such a diamond imperfect isn't very adequate, in my opinion. Let me tell you that if all diamonds of this world were as well cut as your stone we wouldn't have so many questions, dilemmas and regrets as you see posted here.
G/SI 3 is a great combo... Nice, white and if the inclusions are on the side... Well that's perfect! Place a prong over there and you'll have a VS 2 look.
