I grew up with my mother's side of the family very much involved in my life. It was great and made great memories. On the other hand my father's side really didn't have anything to do with us. We also had close friends that I still to this day consider aunts and uncles even though we aren't blood related.

I think family is very important but IMO blood doesn't make you family. It's the love and relationship that makes you family.

BTW now I have kids and my husband's family has NO part of my children's lives. It's their loss. No way in hell would I try to get his family to want to see or get to know my kids. If they can't do it on their own, I dont' want ppl like that around my children....I have my family that love my kids but I also have friends that love my children as their own nephews and nieces. I think as long as a child is loved it doesn't matter who's giving the love
