Experts please weigh-in....wondering about my new diamond...

I just upgraded my diamond to a GIA certed triple 'ex'. The dimensions of this diamond are very different from my original stone. This new diamond, that I just purchased and had set yesterday, looks so different from my last diamond that I traded-up this one up for. I'm liking the new stone...but wondering if the angles of this stone are what I'm perceiving as broad flashes of color, vs my original stone that had more of a fine scintillation. As well, and I know it's late to ask, but did I do okay price-wise? This is my second upgrade -- my first little stone that we paid around $1,500 CAD dollars for back in 1996 (.67, good cut, J color, VS2, which I traded-up to a 1.05, very good cut, F color, SI2 eye clean stone that I paid an additional $3,500 CAD, plus compensation for my original stone in 2006, to this current stone that I just paid $5,500 CAD for (total of 10,500 CAD for all three trades). Here is the GIA grading report or my stone.

My current stone did score 1.4 on the HCA.

I'm enjoying the look and size of this new stone, as it better fits my setting, but wondering if the 'chunky' color show that I'm seeing is indicative of a stone off this type of cut (shallow cut, I believe it is (?)) and if there are any inherent negative issues with this cut.... and wondering if I did a good trade-up price wise...bearing in mind these are Canadian dollars. Basically I paid $10,500 CAD over a 20 year period to get my current stone.

One more question.... This stone is 7.17 x 7.18 in diameter... I'm wondering why it's so much larger face-up than other 1.33 ct stones I see on-line which range closer to 7.0. I'm not complaining about the size, but just curious.

oh, and I should add that I'm not sure why the photos show such a dark part on the pavilion... This is an eye-clean stone and none of the major 'blemishes' plotted on the report show anything of this nature, nor did I see it in the loupe.

(I'm obsessing...lol)

It's a bit shallow, with a lower crown angle. It's what's referred to as a "60/60" stone -
https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/60-60-proportioned-diamond

They usually have less colored light return (fire) and more white light return than a more traditionally proportioned stone. That's not bad, just different. Some people prefer this.

As for the difference between it and you previous stone - sounds like it was a very good cut, which is really not that good. Plus it was an SI2, so it may have had some inclusions like clouds that may have been disrupting light return. You may never have noticed that - just took it as is - and now that you have a better cut stone, the difference is disconcerting.

This stone is a well cut 60/60 on paper. The up side to a shallow stone is that they are flatter (look more like a pancake from the side) than a traditionally cut stone, and as such will look bigger / wider than a stone of identical weight that is a bit deeper.

As long as it is eye clean and inclusions aren't visible, I'd just sit back and enjoy the light show!

Thanks for the info!

Looks like you got a good 60/60. :-) The 75% LGF will make broader vs. splintery arrows and you'd probably notice a big difference between splintery 80 LFG and the 75. Your ring looks marvelous! It's a very shallow stone compared what most of PS would recommend, but it doesn't look dark to me. I have a couple older diamonds that are 58% - 59% deep. Before PS, I guess I was attracted to bright and spready, lol.

Re: Experts please weigh-in....wondering about my new diamon

Thank you for your reply. Yes, you are right....the arrows are broad when viewed under magnification and the overall effect is big chunks of color vs the 'splintery' scintillation of my former, less shallow stone... This stone is alive and dances with every color of the rainbow (as seen in my photos)...particularly under incandescent overhead lighting. I really didn't know about the 60/60 stones... I just went by the GIA cut grade....but I love the fact (that I just learned after I purchased it) that the diameter shows larger, and this shallow cut, I think, is suited to a halo setting, as mine is. I love my new stone! Thanks for lending your expertise.
