Experts please advise, where is the chip on this Asscher?

Please help me decipher the GIA plotting of the chip on this asscher. Is there only one chip on the top of the face of the diamond? Would you be concerned about this chip and its' placement? Durability concerns? Thanks!

GIA 2175138978

Based on the plots it's on the girdle just to the right of the center.
It's visible from the top, but not from the bottom.

BTW, GIA graded this VVS1 and it's the second (therefore less import) inclusion listed.
Personally, I'd not give it a second thought.

If it bugs you perhaps you could tell the seller to have the chip polished off and get it regraded by GIA.
Likely you'd have to pay the original price and the grading fee and commit to buying the diamond.

Thank you. So that's right? There's only the one chip and all the other red marks are feathers? Hmm, that's an idea about the polishing.

FWIW I once had a tiny chip polished off a girdle and then sent the diamond back to GIA for regrading.
IIRC, it lost no weight that showed up to the decimal places that GIA reports.
That's no guarantee though.
Other diamonds may be closer to the weight edge than mine was or have deeper chips.

Who did you have polish it off?

I don't know because a good jeweler in New York sent it out to someone they trusted.
The jeweler was Good Old Gold.

Its impossible to tell from a grading report if its a durability issue.
Where it can be an issue is if it is chipped a few years down the road the insurance company might say it was chipped
when you bought it and refuse the claim.
Unless it is extraordinarily well cut like Kenny's was I would just move on.
Otherwise talk to them about having it polished out and a new report before you buy it.

Re: Experts please advise, where is the chip on this Asscher

IN general, you can't assess a diamond based on plot/GIA report.
IN the case of a GIA graded VVS1, it's an exception to the rule- I agree with Kenny- nothing at all to worry about. There is NO possiblity te chip creates a durability issue. It's great than Kenny was able to repolish a diamond to his satisfaction- but as a general rule, it makes little sense on a VVS

The very small chip is on the girdle, and it is so small, that you cannot even see it with bare eyes. It is very clean diamond!
Being VVS1 clarity, this diamond does not need any re-polishing. There is no integrity issue to worry about.

To you.
Perhaps not to everyone.

People vary.

I got that chip polished off because I was selling a GIA VVS2 diamond and a tiny chip can be an issue to many buyers.
This thread demonstrates that ... this chip was documented on the report, mine was not.

Even if this buyer intends to keep the diamond (s)he is entitled to care about things that don't matter to others.

I'd be much more bothered by a chip on a diamond, and its GIA report, that I'm buying than a chip that I put onto a diamond.
... same with scratches on a new car.

Thanks for the helpful replies and differing opinions! Yes, really I am thinking the issue is the ct weight. I am sure they don't want to re-polish since it would likely be under 3ct then they would not get the price premium for the 3 ct stone. I still want to see it in person and evaluate it. I like Karl point about the insurance giving me issues in the future. Thanks again!

Agree with Kenny...more of a mind thing... :))

I am happy to report that I had a nice visit with clearfading today and got to see the 3 ct asscher she is looking at! It is a gorgeous stone, and she picked a winner! I brought a 20x loupe and was barely able to find the teeny tiny dot they call a chip just on the upper edge of the girdle. This is a CLEAN VVS1, as a VVS1 should be! Very lovely cut, too!

I cannot get good pictures with my cellphone but I attempted to get a couple as inconspicuously as I could at a restaurant! I told her that taking a picture of three diamonds in one photo is about like taking a picture with three children. Those with children will understand! (Fortunately all the diamonds looked far better in person!)

Thanks, tyty! It was almost a year ago when we went to WF together! I can't believe how fast the time passes!
