Experts, please advise: should this ever happen when a diamond is set?

Thank you, everyone, for the additional input. I appreciate your opinions. I''m going to talk to the vendor on Monday and see how to go from there.

I agree. they really should have had it sent to Scott Kay to begin with and not tried messing with it themselves IMO.

Who is the vendor if you don''t mind sharing? I understand if you''d prefer not to say

Not trying to judge them b/c I think a lot of jewelers will try and do things themselves. But, if someone is purchasing from them in the future we can advice them to insist that any work to be done on designer settings should be sent to the designer.
mrss, I''d prefer not to share the vendor name at this time because I''ve received excellent service from them so far and really have enjoyed working with them.

I also want to note again that I now know that sending the ring to Scott Kay would have been the best choice to begin with, but I chose to have the vendor work on it in-house because when they told me they could set the new diamond by simply extending the prongs, I trusted that opinion. It seemed the easier alternative at the time. Of course, if I''d been told of all the changes they''d need to make, I''d have certainly had it sent to Scott Kay instead.
And Scott Kay would have told you, "Sorry, that diamond will not fit in this ring, you will need to have one made to hold that size of stone."

Your vendor did a LOT of work to make your diamond fit into that mounting, including making the new prongs and moving them out from the original location on the mounting.

I will agree that he could have communicated better with you, but you also told him that you wanted it mounted as low as possible without the culet touching the ring." (A good idea by the way, I just had a diamond recut that the culet touched the ring, but not for long...)

I suspect that your vendor did believe he was doing what you wanted, although clearly he was not. As a vendor who has finally learned to say no to many requests I have much empathy for this vendor for trying too hard, but think that as a practical matter he should have said. "Sorry, this will not work the way you want it to." It took me a while before I learned how to say no, we vendors tend to want to please, which can often lead to problems.

It is my sincere hope for you that he will listen hard to what you have to say and see if he can not remake the prongs longer for you, as Scott Kay will most likely not be able to make this right at this point.

Keep us posted.

I agree 100% with Wink - from your own comments this vendor likes you and you like them. I doubt they woke up that day and thought "I am going to mess with XXX today"

It seems from the pics that they did what was asked of you.
Popped a bigger stone in and made it low.

You should ask them about it or point them to this thread.
