Could you take a look at this and tell me if this diamond is a poor choice for a budget and desire for a 3 ct stone? I am not sure how to interpret the specific inclusions noted on the GIA report...(read it property) and estimate how this will effect the true 'appearance' of the stone once set in platinum, with 2 side stones and a very small amt of pave (vintage setting). Will these look like big defects to the naked eye or wil it have very poor sparkle/light performance or look milky/cloudy. I don't care if you can see inclusions under the microscope but want to asses how this will effect the overall visual appearance of the diamond...will it just be ugly. I just don't have the experience of having looked at many different diamonds and I'm shopping online.

My budget is not that great...maybe $14K for this 3 ct stone (which I know is nearly impossible), so I'm looking for that hidden gem sort of diamond where the inclusions exist but are twinnings, or somehow are spread out or in the 'right' place where they dont have a serious effect on the diamond. Any suggestions? thanks in advance! so much. Dana
 
The price is probably low because the twinning wisp are affecting the brilliance. I dont think it will be clear and sparkly. Have you asked JA about the
twinning wisp? Diamonds are priced low for a reason...I think the reason will be the lack of brilliance due to the twinning wisp....talk to JA.

Your wants/expectations dont really match your budget:eek: but I think you already know that.
 
it looks so cloudy because of the twinning wisps. keep looking

What is your order of priority? Size, color, clarity, cut/sparkle... because you're going to have to give somewhere. You won't find a pretty 3ct stone for 14K. But if you really only care about size and lack of sparkle doesn't bother you, then that changes things.

Would you consider a halo setting? Then you could still have the finger presence but also afford a nice (smaller) diamond.
 
I'd go below 3 cts and get a well cut, nice quality stone. 3cts is not realistic for $14k unless you luck up on a second hand ring from a divorce or something. I1 is not a smart buy.
 
I'm going to play devil's advocate. :evil: I read through all the responses here before opening the JA link, and I have to say ... I don't hate this diamond as much as I thought I would based on the reactions posted so far. I mean, it's not "frozen spit"!

Disregarding the inclusions for a minute, this marquise has a lot going for it. It has a lovely outline and L/W ratio, a nice crown, no extremely thick girdle, reasonably good-looking facet shapes under the table, minimal bowtie, active (flashing) virtual facets in the areas near the tip (which is uncommon for mq), and a lot less "mush" than commonly seen in mq.

What will be the effect of the inclusions? Extrapolating from the JA video, I would think the stone would have a slightly hazy appearance, and the flashes reflected from the diamond facets will more subdued than in a cleaner stone (i.e., not as bright/blinding). The small crystal under the table will probably not be visible.

So is this a good buy for OP? Depends on how much she values the positives over the negatives. This is a rare stone, in that only ~2% of marquise diamonds in the weight range 2.85-3.15 ct fall under $16k (while the median price is $32k). Therefore, if I were OP, I would order this diamond to have a look at it in person before deciding whether the size of the diamond outweighs the adverse effects of the inclusions.

This is not a diamond in the rough sort of stone. Its a cheap diamond because it looks like a cheap diamond.

I hate to be blunt but this would be a mistake. And I don't want to see you make a mistake.

Please don't buy this.
