I am planning on upgrading my diamond ring. I have my decision narrowed down between two rings. The first diamond ring is a 1.70 J-color VS1 with medium blue flouresence. The price of this first ring is $10,600. The second ring is a 1.73 I-color SI2 with no flouresence. The second ring is priced at $9,700. I am equally happy with both of these diamonds, but I would like opinions on which of these two rings is the better deal quality-wise and price-wise? Please help me make my decision. I am planning on buying one of these diamonds tomorrow:)

Do you have the other specs like diameter, table, depth, crown angle, etc.? And what kind of cert do they have?

I don''t have any specs on them, but they were both GIA certified. Assuming the other specs where equal what would be your preference?

The most important thing that determines how beautiful a diamond will be is cut.

But you are not paying any attention to cut.

What type of cut should I be looking for in a 1.7 -1.75 ct? Any ranges?

If you are looking at rounds:
Instead of ranges, get these four numbers from the GIA report:

Depth %
Table %
Crown Angle
Pavilion angle

Plug them into this tool and click on GO:

HCA

It will give you a score.
You want a score under 2.0

These four numbers interact and this makes it too complex to just give you ranges for each number.
This HCA tool greatly simplifies the process.

Yes it is very clever.
It makes the complex simple.

HCA stands for Holloway Cut Advisor.
The inventor, Garry Holloway, is a contributor here.
Lucky for us.

BTW, at the top of this screen click on KNOWLEDGE, then select Advanced Tutorial.
It is the best Diamond101 class around.

Read as many of the topics on the left as you can.

Roughly, you want a table of about 54-57, depth of about 60-62, crown angle of 34-35. Diameter should be something like 7.7 or 7.8 mm.

And I''ll add, a "complimentary" pavillion angle in the range of 40.7-41.

Also, on the HCA, Gary is in the process of revising it, so you could actually get a stone scoring a bit over 2 that could be quite beautiful.

Oops! Forgot one other thing...the girdle should be thin, medium, or slightly thick, or a combination of those. No others are acceptable.
