I''m wondering if anyone has actually done this, and what their experiences, thoughts, and opinions are on the outcome. Thanks!
 
The basket of my 7 stone is rhodium plated yellow gold (19K). The ring was handed down to me and needed to be reshanked. I asked Wink to reshank it for me in 14K white gold then rhodium plate it all for me. Looks great and you can't tell at all. But I also don't wear it everyday.
 
I''ve been wondering about this myself. Within days of each other, I had two jewelers give me different opinions on the subject. One was quite willing to rodium plate my yg anniversary band to match the ring I was thinking of having him make for me. He even had his wife, who also works in the shop, show me her rings that he has plated. The other was completely opposed, saying he does not do it. His opinion was that the plating always rubs off quickly. I found it interesting.
 
Diamond*Dana did this a year or so ago, so hopefully she will see this!
 
I had my original yg e-ring rhodium plated. I managed to scratch some of the plating off pretty soon after it was done. I think it''s ok for occasional wear but not every day. Just my opinion though.
 
I had a diamond cut butterfly pendant rhodium plated. It was originally yellow gold. It took 2 different jewelers and three coatings but it did finally come out nice and white and has stayed that way for YEARS. Now of course, I''m craving it back yellow LOL.
 
........a pendant might not get the rubbing a ring does - just my 2 cents.
 
I have an amethyst ring I had plated about 4 years ago, and it still looks great. But I only wear it a few times per year.
 
I have done it to plenty of pieces, earrings, bracelets, pendants and rings. It''s great for things that don''t get to much contact or aren''t worn that often. For me, if it were a ring I wore everyday it would probably have to be re-dipped every three months or so. For me this is worth it and I don''t mind to much.
 
I had my yg anniversary band plated a few years ago and it needs redipped every 3 months or so. I wear it just about every day.
 
A ring that is worn daily will have the gold wear off unevenly, so it''ll require frequent redippings. Earrings and pendants would be okay, though without much hassle.

It worked pretty good, but I did not keep the setting long enough to know the true outcome. My jeweler told me that it would probably work better on pieces other than rings since they would not get the same wear and tear, but I think that it also has to do with the person that is wearing the piece.

I kept the setting that was rhodium plated for several months, and it held up well, so I think it is worth a shot

Can the process be reversed if I don''t like it?
 
I have a couple 2-tone bands - 1 thick, 1 thin that i stack if/when i want to mix metals - it pulls it altogether!
 
I have a ring that my mom passed down to me that I rhodium plated since I rarely wear yellow gold. I wore it every day for probably 2 years and still wear it frequently. Yes the rhodium rubbed off after about a year and a half BUT since my ring doesn''t spin at all it only wore down on places you don''t see the gold so it doesn''t bother me at all. If I take it off and you look at it it looks a little hokey but I really don''t mind as I don''t often admire it when it''s not on my finger.

For me it was a good decision. I wouldn''t have worn it in YG so even though I might need to shell out a little more money in a few years to get it replated at least it''s getting worn instead of sitting in a box.

my best girlfriend had it done to her engagement ring when she divorced. it looks exactly like rhodium plating over white gold, and so far is wearing well but, again, it''s not now an ''every day'' ring. so far, tho - no scratches or yellow showing through.

and yes, apparently you can have it reversed.

Yes, it is just a electro-plated layer of rhodium on it, a simply polish should get it off.

I had my eternity band plated 14 months ago because I had my enagementredone in platinum and I wanted the color to match without gong to the expense of having the eternity band (hand crafted) remade at the same time.

I have worn it every day since and there is no sign of wear yet.

I had it done by a well known jeweler in Philadelphia.

Judging from my positive experience aa opposed to other posteers there must be different levels and thicknesses of the plating.

An added plus is that I was not wearing my eternity band due to a gold sensitivity, and the rhodium plating has taken care of that problem.

I had a pendant plated a few years ago. My jeweler said that because there''s little surface to skin contact with it that the plating would last for ages. I imagine a ring that has a lot of contact would need to be re-plated more often.

I have done it on a few rings, none of which I wear on a daily basis. None of them are showing yellow after about a year (I would say I wear them once every 2 weeks or so).

So inquiring minds want to know... what are you thinking about plating?

I have done this a number of times and there are no problems if the rhodium is done properly and will look great. The gold needs to be clean and polished with no pitfalls. The rhodium should be left for twice as long to put a healthy coating on.

Essentially, white gold is also slightly yellow as pure gold is yellow and even when mixed with white metals to make a white alloy (9k, 10k, 14k or 18k), the yellow tint will still be there to some degree. When the rhodium starts to fade in either case, it can be an eye sore and should be re-dipped. With the yellow gold you may need to do this more regularly as it will be a bit more obvious when it fades.
