Everyday Jadeite - love it, buy it, now you must wear it! Show us the jadeite you are wearing.

Finally I add my ring, that I am really loving wearing! I was waiting until I could do the shopping cart photo, inspired by mellowyellowgirl! It cracks me up. I see Crimson does these photos too! I added a produce shot as well. I love the encouragement to wear my ring anywhere and everywhere!

Love the proportions and style of this ring!

When I first started buying jade, I tested the waters with Canadian nephrite. It’s so affordable, comparatively speaking. Here is a budget find! I think it’s such a cheerful shade of green.

Being Canadian, I am planning to make this my first jadeite purchase too!

Jadeite ring that I’m always reaching for! Tempted to go into the realm of jadeite bangles.. if only I could get the sizing right!

Such a delicious colour!

Re: bangle sizing, I bought several cheap bangles in 52, 54, 56 and 58mm to test them at home. Initially I thought 56mm was tight, and then after a few attempts using copious hand cream or washing up liquid, found that I could squeeze into 52s!

This makes a huge difference because not only does it flop around less on the wrist, but smaller bangles use less material and can be significantly cheaper than those 54mm+ in the Chinese market (where I’m currently residing). There are some very petite women here who can wear 47-48s and thus enjoy a 30-50% discount versus the larger sizes!

However, I would caution with sizing on guifei (noble consort / concubine) bangles that are oval in shape. Typically they say that whatever your circular bangle shape is, add two and that’s your guifei - ie at 52mm, my guifei sizing should be 54. But I can’t for the life of me fit into standard 54 guifei (54mm across and 54-7=47mm length), I need a 55 guifei (55mm across and 55-7=48mm length).

Also, some guifeis have shorter / longer widths than standard, all of which affect wearability.

Here are four of the most common bangle shapes
  • 1 - 贵妃镯 — Noble Consort Bangle (or Guifei Bangle), oval in shape, standard bangle width is 9-13mm. Sizing needs to be ~2mm bigger than your Standard Round
  • 2 - 正圈 — Standard Round, standard width is 9-13mm
  • 3 - 美人镯 — Beauty Bangle, smaller width at 7-9mm. Sizing can be 1mm smaller than Standard Round
  • 4 - 圆条 — Round Bar (referring to the fully rounded cross-section style), typically 9-11mm. Anything 12mm+ is called a chubby round bar. Sizing can be 1mm smaller than Standard Round

So glad you shared it here, @higanbanya ! I remember you describing it as Milo green on the Evaluating Jadeite thread. I love it so much, the jadeite is so vibrant and it is well proportioned. Isn’t it great to have a ring that you always reach for? A solid, gorgeous ring.
Sorry I am not of much help when it comes to jadeite bangles. I don’t have any. Happy searching! It is so much fun to be on a hunt. If you live in Singapore, I suggest On Cheong at South Bridge Road (the headquarters). The staff are not pushy and they don’t get paid on commission. They are friendly and ready to help. So you can try to your heart’s content. They have a wide selection of jadeite (probably the best I have seen in SG) so you can browse away happily.

Awww thank you so much for the detailed guide on bracelets!! Love your jadeite pieces and the photo guide you did on the quality and pricing differences, they were super helpful! ❤️

Will take extra care if picking an oval bracelet.. didn’t realise the sizing could vary so greatly - perhaps will also try to get a starter bangle to get a feel of the sizing, fingers crossed to get a smaller bracelet size!

I love this ring so much!!!

Do it!!! If it makes you feel any better I have bangles ranging from 52 to 58. Some are better winter ones, some better summer ones.

Hoho thank you!! Looks like I might go the multiple bangle sizes route.. as @Pomelo and you did! And will definitely update on the thread once I’ve started on it

HAHHAA omg you remembered the Milo green! Yessss it’s amazing, it’s my current favourite (‘: thank you so much for starting the evaluation jadeite thread, am looking out for the zhongshui a lot more now, and appreciating them a lot more!

Will definitely pay On Cheong a visit, thank you for the recommendation! ❤️❤️

Not sure why I can’t quote you directly @Crimson so I’ll paste it here

@Pomelo, those studs go so well with your other earrings.
You made some really important.
Glow counts for a lot in jadeite, as it does in emerald and spinel.
Thanks for sharing about the foil. It doesn’t just help the jadeite to glow, but in some cases, it also hides any flaws on the back of the stone.”

Thank you! This pair will be a birthday gift for my mum. She doesn’t own any jadeite and this pair is dainty enough for her conservative work environment plus comfortable enough for wearing 24/7. She doesn’t normally say yes to presents so I’m thrilled that she actually wanted these!

Out of interest, do you have a preference for the glow in emeralds vs jadeite? I had been looking at emerald cabs for years but never pulled the trigger because everything glowy was out of my price range, but green jadeite is ticking my boxes for a glowy green!

So sweet of you @Pomelo, and so delightful that your Mom likes what you chose! It is also such a relief, isn’t it?
I like all kinds of glow. I have different cabochons - emerald, jadeite, ruby, sapphire, chrysoberyl, moonstone, rubellite, etc. I appreciate the glow of cabochons, and how one can wear a large cabochon without looking showy or loud.
I can’t make an all-jadeite vs. all-emerald comparison but I must say I my favourite glow is Minerva’s. The glow seems to have great depth.and I love her bluish tint. It’s a personal preference of course. It may be an unfair comparison but I have not seen a jadeite cab of the same size and thickness as Minerva that has that same deep pool feel. Minerva doesn’t have a foil back either.
In general though. I think it is easier to find jadeite that glows well, at a better price, and in a hard-wearing stone.

Enjoying your pastel coloured bracelets @Begonia ! Your Myanmar beads have lovely zhongshui. Forgive my ignorance, what is borscht jadeite?

I just received this pair of small jadeite studs. Can you believe the settings cost more than 4x the jadeite cabochons itself?! That’s because of the black dots, which I figured wouldn’t be noticeable once on the ear (and if someone does notice them, they’re probably too close :lol-2: ).

Comparing the cabs (top pair) with singles (bottom two). My pair of cabs were less than 1/10-15th the price of the singles due to the difference in cleanliness and glow. It’s pretty stark how extra glow exponentially affects the price!

IMG_6668.jpeg

ETA: these cabs are set with “closed back” to enhance the glow.

As per the image above, unset pieces that aren’t top quality are often sold with a silver foil paper backing to enhance the glow (you can just about see the outline of the paper around the cabs). You can of course ask for the silver foil paper to be removed when making an assessment.

all day yesterday i thought of your earrings every time i was behind the counter because i was looking straight at the coke fridge
i wish i had taken a pix because the sun/ the light ? was shinning straight through it and it glowed

Ooh, how exciting! Do share more, @Dreamer_D .

It’s not on the super near horizon but someone recommended a Canadian Etsy store for Canadian jadeite and I have saved their store. I would love a bead bracelet and necklace soon. I love the feel of stone beads, so cool and tactile to wear.

Sorry I should’ve been clearer - I bought multiple cheap agate bangles to get a sense of sizing. It would’ve been too expensive to buy them as sizer-bangles in jadeite haha

Every so often, I do my jewelry rounds, and I saw a really nice bead necklace listed on The Jade Mine Canada’s website not long ago. I really like the color!

I bought these earrings as my first jade piece. I have this nephrite bangle arriving Monday from MatsAlice. It has some cracks, so it’s just for fun as long as it lasts!1755188496013.jpeg1755188528917.png

I love your bright earrings. Also, I enjoy the nephrite bangles very much. Hope you enjoy yours!

My sister on a jadeite binge today.

I regret not getting a pedant like hers. I used to think necklaces made me itch but now I realise it was just that I have allergies on some days and an antihistamine resolves everything.

So I did a thing.. bought an icy halo ring to have a feel of white jadeite, then went on to buy a pendant to match cos the glow is addictive!

IMG_2972.jpegIMG_2968.jpegIMG_2967.jpeg

Hooray! That’s how it goes - another, and another…haha! Enjoy your lovely glowing pieces, @higanbanya.

Collected a Guatemalan jadeite bangle to have a feel if bangles are my thing.. and fell in love with an icy lavender wuji bangle there so I guess it’s meant to be (‘:

Forgive the bruised hands, gotta stop the jadeite buying spree after this!

Wow, you worked really hard to find the right bangle! Poor hand… hope it will get some ice. Glad you found this interesting dual colour bangle!

Yay! Thanks for sharing your joy, @Odyessy44! Your manicure and the jadeite really set one another off. Love the watermelon shot! Yes, wear it anywhere and everywhere you please :D

Thank you, thank you Crimson! Thanks for giving me the confidence to buy it. I was just in Europe for a death in my DH's family and wore this ring. It was very comforting and I got lots of compliments on it.

My condolences, dear @Odyssey44. Jadeite is so appropriate for times like this. The colours on your ring and soothing and calming. Glad you provided some beauty at such a difficult time.

@Begonia The Borscht comparison is so cute. Here, the beads are called bubbles, or boba, because they look like the bubbles in bubble tea! They look sweet :)
IMG_0455.jpeg

what i bubble tea like/, ive seen it but never had it
ive read of cases of the bubbles getting stuck inside the digestive track and causing trouble

My condolences on the passing of your husband's family member
thats the trouble with living so far from one's family, its a long way in an emergency or life and death situation
im glad the new ring gave you comfort

Yes, the bubbles - or pearls as they are called here :) can be hazardous if they go down the wrong way or if we don’t chew them properly. Some pearls are made from jelly but the tapioca pearls are sweet, sticky and chewy. I don’t like pearls — they interfere with my enjoyment of the tea but I can understand their appeal. They are a bit like a dessert. Bubble teas can be made with very good black teas, oolong teas, green teas and some of the best high mountain teas but they also have added sugar, cream and even Oreos or cheese (horrors).
I prefer tea with no sugar and some milk. Cheaper and no empty calories!

Thank you sweet Daisy! It was his father and he was doing poorly so maybe we should not have been surprised but we were. We did think and hope we would see him at Christmas, but are very thankful we had a Zoom call with him just days before he passed.

Thank you lovely Crimson! I was truly amazed how tranquil and peaceful I felt when looking at my ring.

Ooh I love wuji, especially icy ones!

Tried one on the other day but decided against buying it. I really liked the distinct patches of green and black, but it needs a whiter, icier base
