Hello there

Thank you for an excellent board!

I am about to purchase an engagement ring - I have found two diamonds which gives me a good HCA score and where I like the specifications. I actually found another one - but after putting it into HCA the result was not so good as I thought :)

Can you help me evaluate these two?? :)

For both of them:
Carat: 0.4ct
Clarity: Internally Flawless
Cut: Excellent
Color: F
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick (faceted)

Diamond 1:
Table: 53%
Depth: 62%
Crown angle: 34
Pavillon angle: 40.6
HCA: 0.8
GIA report dated: December 14, 2011

Diamond 2:
Table: 56%
Depth: 62.5%
Crown angle: 35
Pavillon angle: 40.8
HCA: 1.6
GIA report dated: June 20, 2012

I REEEEALLY hope you will take the time to help me :)

Best regards!

The HCA's are both great. Worth investigating further. Does the vendor provide ASET or idealscope images? That's really the only way to really know anything further.

Why IF? You could get a much bigger stone if you drop clarity a little... :)

The diamonds are from Blue Nile - they dont really provide anything else than the GIA report. But they provide a 30 day return policy - so my idea is to have the ring/diamond appraised after I receive it.

Well, I am affraid that a larger stone than 0.4ct will be too big. I want it to be flashy yet discreet - even though I could imagine that most of you pro's like them 2ct plus:)) I did think about a 0.5ct SI1, color G with a HCA of 1.4. But I worry that it will be too large.

Regarding the cut it's mostly because I think it's pretty cool with an IF diamond - but also because I read it's an important factor. Is that misunderstood? I guess it only regards inclusions and maybe I should look for a lower grade...... Uh, I really don't know! :)

But... What would you recommend? Both of those two - but also others? Should I upgrade the ct and downgrade the Cut? Is it really the HCA score which is the best recommendation available?:)

Ok if it's a mind-clean thing, then IF is fine! But the IF is not necessary at all. You can get eye-clean stones all the way down to VS2, and some SI1's. You will pay (much) more for higher clarity grades. And the inclusions (unless they are bad SI2's - I's) usually don't affect the "sparkle" of the stone; as you said you want it "flashy but discreet", and clarity has very little to do with that.

The cut quality is the most important factor, not shape (round, princess, etc), or color, or clarity, or carat weight; as you probably know since you are familiar with the HCA. The numbers here all look ok.

I have a 0.51ct G SI1, and I can tell you it is not too large at all. Especially if it is set as a solitaire. And it faces up nice and white.

I'd look at other vendors that do provide ASET / IS images (James Allen, Good Old Gold, Whiteflash, etc).

NEVER downgrade the cut quality! :)

And the HCA is a weed-out tool - anything under 2 is worth further investigation.
