So I'm in the process of ordering a shared prong eternity band with idjewelry - having read invariably positive comments over here put my mind at ease. Now the question is...how "substantial" should the eternity band be? This will be my engagement ring, so it has to be substantial enough to stand on its own, but also shouldn't overwhelm my rather smaller hands when worn in combination with a wedding band later. Any suggestions? I will discuss with idjewelry also, but won't hear back from them until next week due to vacations.

P.S. I can't try on much, because eternity bands are so rarely found in Germany. I think I must have been to every jeweler in the area by now!

Oh my goodness, your engagement ring is going to be so classy and elegant. I just LOVE eternity engagement rings for their understated appeal! The size of your ring is a personal preference, but I would want a stand-alone eternity to be at least 4mm wide. Of course, once you add a wedding band it won''t be all by its lonesome, so if you want smaller, that would work too. My eternities are 3mm each, and while not really thin, they just don''t look substantial on their own (I stack 3 together to create a wide 9mm band).

Maybe you could get some ideas by looking photos of this site. Or you could start a "show me your eternity bands" thread with stats of course.

I absolutely love the idea of an eternity band as an e-ring as well, in fact, it''s what I wanted! It''s unfortunate that you can''t try any on because comfort is a big factor in deciding how big is too big. Is it possible for you to order a couple of very cheap fake eternities in a couple of sizes you are considering? It wouldn''t cost much and you could wear them for a couple of days to see if the size would be comfortable.

This is one of my favourite threads, dedicated to eternity bands

Hi

Have you been to Wempe jewellers in Germany, we went to their store in Koln a few years ago, and they had quite a few eternity styles and some half eternity which would still give you an idea of sizing.
The other thing, have you thought of a trip to the UK, london just so you can try some sizes and get some idea, you will find heaps on Bond street to try, and then get a better idea of what you need with your hand. It is so subjective, that the best thing to do, if you are going to spend that much money is try them on. A long weekend shopping/sightseeing trip to London might be worth it.

One more idea, costume jewellery, if you can find some eterntiy bands eg stores like NEXT in the UK have costume jewellery (is that in Germany??) you can see how the size looks and then measure how many milimeters it is to get an idea.

good luck

Thanks for all the great ideas. I did order a fake band which should be here any day. I''ll also check out Wempe next time I''m in Cologne (lucky accident that it will be to pick up soon-to-be fiancé at the trainstation!). And actually the London idea is great, we were still deciding on a weekend trip, and we have family over there.

Oh yay! Eternity band e-rings are one of my favourite looks. Classic and elegant. I would say 4mm sounds good to make sure it isn''t too flimsy looking (not sure that''s the right word...). I''m not sure what else to say, other than that I''m going to be watching your threads like a hawk!
