Hey folks,
I''ve been a long time lurker, and just recently joined. Great information here!!! And oh so friendly

I''ve a question for those who are in the know on engraving settings...
I''m meeting up with the goldsmith making the setting for the diamond later today to talk engraving and would appreciate any help on this one before heading over there. After a lot of discussion with the jeweller, he advised me that my custom plan (I had sketches and everything!!) was not a good idea, and convinced me to go with a Lucida Knife Edge style in white gold. I like the look of it and I know my girl is after a thin setting. However, I would still like to incorporate elements of my custom design in the ring through engraving. My girl absolutely loves butterflies and I thought it would be neat to create a setting based on her favouritist thing in the world (besides me ofcourse!)

Anywho, I was thinking of having somesort of butterfly design engraved on the ring. Whadya think? The jeweller told me that due to the design I went with, it wouldn''t be possible to do ANYTHING like that. It''s kinda got me bummed but also skeptical- is it at all possible, or should I go with something ''stock''?

Also, anybody have any pictures they would like to share of butterfly themed designs for a solitaire setting?

Thanks so Much!

Ok... engraving complicated models usually needs to be accomodated by the ring's design - and a knife edge band does not sound prone to little engraved drawings to me

Maybe a jeweler specializing in such personalized designs could give you more options, (Tradeshop is one example). And you may like THESE butterflies

I have heard that engraving is usually done on platinum, anyways, since it "holds the pattern" better. That might also be a factor.

Most bands you can get a message engraved on the inside... maybe you could find someone who would do a little butterfly. It would wear off at some point, since it's gold, but it would be a nice little special thing for the two of you.

Thanks so much Valeria101!!! Wow...Tradeshop has a TONNE of pics!
I really didn't want anything overly complicated- just maybe a couple of small butterflies on either side or something like that. yeah, I know, too small for a full out engraving.

I am affraid there is no such thing: one can have little messages engraved on the diamnd's girdle these days. Only jewelry metals would not hold such fine engraving as diamonds can.

It really is up to the jeweler to decide. Actually, looking at how the butterflies are placed along the band of the ring at Fay, you can probably have something alike on a higher-than-wide band like knife edge ones are

And remember those "hidden diamond" settings? Any little accent could be paced in the same spot on the ring's head. You are not the first to ask for a little personal figure to be included in the ring design: here's one example (LINK) where the width of the band did not matter at all. There are more along the same idea on the same site...

A butterfly could be laser engraved on the sides of a ring far easier than doing normal engraving. Laser engraving is not as deep or as sooth, but it can be highly detailed and not terrifically costly. My partner at my other lab, DGLA, doews laser engraving on jewelry items. While we specialize in high volume work, it COULD be done. White gold, yellow gold or platinum would all come out the same.

If this would work for you, we'd be glad to work with you to get what you might want.

Hey David! I had my diamond sent to you earlier in April for appraisal (through Martin Sheffield). Thanks for the response! Didn't know that laser engraving was even a possibility. Wow. Well I have the appointment set up for tonight, so we'll see how it goes. If I don't feel comfortable with my choices than I'll definately take you up on that offer.

Thanks!
