Ok...now I''m looking at another tension, but this time not the curvy type. This one is only 5mm, and at the 870 cost I can get a nice half carat diamond to place in it. :)

Here is the diamond I have picked:

$847

Laser Inscription Registry: GIA 6107392075
Round Brilliant
Measurements: 5.15 - 5.19 x 3.23 mm
Carat Weight: 0.53 carat
Color Grade: G
Clarity Grade: SI2
Cut Grade: Excellent
Proportions:
Depth: 62.5%
Table: 56%
Crown Angle: 35.0°
Crown Height: 15.0%
Pavilion Angle: 41.2°
Pavilion Depth: 43.5%
Star length: 55%
Lower Half: 80%
Girdle: Medium, Faceted
Culet: None
Finish:
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None
Clarity Characteristics: Feather

and here is the setting I am now looking at:

I like that setting much better. A 5mm will look great it in too since it''s the same width as the band, not much small like the other.

I definitely prefer the setting you linked in this post.

I would pass on this one tmelsh, it is a borderline steep deep and could leak light.

Here are some numbers you can use to find a well cut round.

depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above

note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

And from expert John Pollard.

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).

Novori has some nice diamonds with EGL reports...but I''m wary about picking an EGL diamond as I have heard they are not as good of a standard. Is this true?

Their color and clarity grade quite often is 1-2 grades lower if graded by AGS or GIA.

Tmelsh, EGL are considered by some to be softer on grading than GIA or AGS, so apparently colour and clarity could be graded higher by EGL whereas the other two labs grade more strictly, so can thus be lower.

I actually sat down with my g/f again and looked at rings with her, and now I''m even more confused as to what she wants. XD The most engaging thing she would say is "I guess I wouldn''t mind something like this". Then again, she never really does get super excited, unless it''s seeing me after a long time apart. :)

Blue Nile had a few nice rings that she seemed to like:

http://www.bluenile.com/sapphire-diamond-engagement-ring-setting_6239?filter_id=1&collection_id=241

and this one from Dimend Scaasi:

Has anybody seen rings like these for cheaper than listed here?

Thanks!

As it isn''t a surprise, try and draw her out a bit more as to what her preferences are. BN are competitive on price, I am not very familiar with DS to make a comparison.
