So I''ve built an engagement ring that I really like, and that I think my girlfriend will love.

http://www.whiteflash.com/golden-wardrobe/gold_details.aspx?itemcode=WF-4099&size=8.50
with

But the only problem is that her finger size is approx 8.5; Do you think I should cut back on the color to an H or maybe even an I to increase the size? I want it to be more or less eye clean and be as ideally cut as possible, while still having a size that will look pretty proportionate on her finger. The high end of my budget is about $2000-2500 for the entire ring, so any suggestions are really appreciated.

I would drop to a J or K and to SI2/I1 to go up in size. In those sizes J/K is a nice option (even in white metals) and an eyeclean SI2 should be easy to find, even an eyeclean or prongably-included I1.

With an 8.5 finger maximizing size of the centrestone would be my first priority.

She told me that she doesn''t want to have that much yellow tint in the diamond, would an I ideally cut turn face up/in most everyday situations be rather white?

In MY opinion yes. But if you set it next to a sizable higher color (DEFG) you would see color. Can you go anywhere
and check out well cut I/J colored stones. Like Jared''s peerless collection?

Really, going down to a J in that size range would be white face-up. You could always take a trip to your local jareds and check out their peerless AGS0s to see what you think

Have you seen this video by GOG...it covers diamond colors D-J. Gives you sort of a relative color idea
of the different grades.

So would you say anywhere from 0.50-1.0 carats would be a pretty safe bet in the I/J color and still see minimal tint?

Yes. Really. I really think the size gain outweighs the minimal tint you may see. Just don't use F sidestones. Your/her priorities may be different.

The casual observer isn't going to look at a 1ct J and say "tinted", "yellow", "dingy", whatever other adjective... it's just going to look white.

My first diamond was a J (Graded by EGL Israel, so it was probably a K or even an L!) and I never for one second saw any color. I think you''re fine with a J.

want IS for that c/p combo

Can someone help me find the best bang for my buck diamond for the setting in my last post? I/J color, ideal cut, preferabbly SI1 or a not-so-bad SI2. Sorry for all the bothersome questions.

Edit: And if possibly, $1600 or less.

I just got my ering almost two weeks ago. It is a J color VVS2 clarity excellent cut emerald cut diamond. I was told that the slight tin of my ring would be more visible due to the emerald cut, but it''s not. I put my 1 ct ring on my hand and my mother''s 4ct G color radiant on the same finger and neither I nor my Mother could tell the difference in the color. The only time I see the slight tint is when I hold my ring up to direct sunlight and tilt it very far.

have you thought about a halo setting? there are some very pretty halos to be had for about 1.2-1.5K. spend the rest on a .5 ct.

The girlfriend isn''t a fan of the halo''s. They do make the stone look much bigger but she just doesn''t like the way they look.

whew, that J is not a nice cut.

Yes, better options. I am not optimistic about the H being eye clean just based on the size of the main inclusion, but you never know.

Food for thought -- I have found that higher colors seem ot pop and have a little more finger presence that lower colors -- they "glow" a little more. So perhaps though the F is .3mm smaller it would have more bling factor. This is just based on my own experience owning a K and then a G.

a definite NOT

Right, and also don''t forget---an ideal cut I/J will look better than a badly cut stone. The brilliance and fire of the great cut really masks color incredibly well.
