Wink, thank you for the illustrative article.

I absolutely agree with you that it is reasonable to charge for a refurbishing, and heck I even think there should be a modest charge for a dip in the ultrasonic at the jewelers if you''re not a client. And I emphatically second your last paragraph, that the other jeweler should have better explained what he was planning on doing with your daughter''s friend''s ring.

But when I think of "cleaning," I do mean just that: getting rid of dust or dirt that is trapped in the crevices. It''s like when I say I''m cleaning my house this weekend, I mean I''m de-cluttering, taking the trash out, etc., not re-roofing or re-painting (which is what I think a polishing is like with a ring). Cleaning and refurbishing are two very different things for me, if you get my point? IMHO, it is misleading to compare a cleaned-up ring and a repolished/refurbished ring and call them both "cleaned." Just like a steamed ring can''t be compared with a worn white gold ring with a fresh coating of rhodium, yanno?

Even a simple dip in the ultrasonic can lead to trouble for jewelers although most will still do it for ‘free’ because it’s friendly customer service. The problem comes when, for example, one of the stones comes out in the ultrasonic because there was nothing holding it in but the gunk. Who should be responsible for the resetting? Most salespeople aren’t well qualified to predict problems and those that are aren’t very motivated to do a thorough inspection prior to what’s being offered as a free service.

Great article. That reminds me I need to get my Jewel Jet out tomorrow.

Thanks for the article.. it''s well written and easy to understand
I enjoyed reading it

Thanks for the detailed article. I can definitely see a difference.

I have a question about professional cleaning though. For those who bought their engagement rings online (e.g. from BGD), how do you guys get it cleaned professionally? Do you mail the ring back to Brian and Lesley every year to get checked and polished and serviced? Or do you go to a local jeweler to get the check up annually? If the latter, does that void the warranty on the ring workmanship from the original vendor?

-Thanks!

You would have to speak to the original vendor, but I can not imagine having a ring polished would void the original warranty. Most would not ship their rings back and forth because of the expense, but I have clients who do.

Great article!

I can NOT believe how grimy the "before" shots are .. the "after" shots look like a whole new ring!
