Hello, thinking about purchasing an emerald. Have some preliminary thoughts studying from this forum (wealth of knowledge!). Would really appreciate help from folks here about what’s realistic to expect before approaching vendors.

I am thinking about $7-8k. Requires a reputable certificate. Minor inclusion is okay but not distracting. Does not need to be from specific locations. Minor inclusion is okay but not distracting. My emphasis is more on the size and color. I prefer ones that are vivid and saturated, and bigger the merrier.

What sizes/color could I realistically expect from the criteria above? Do you have any suggestions of the stones I should look at? Thanks everyone!

I'd say you could find something in the top quality range of Colombian material around 1ct with that budget. Then I would sort of work backwards from that mark. Lower clarity and color, and perhaps buying from other locales, will afford you a larger stone at a similar price. I'm not one who is too obsessed with origin, except in a few specific instances. And this happens to be one of them. I've found that Colombian emeralds, and particularly from the Muzo region, are far and away my favorite in terms of color. There's a reason why they fetch a premium. Then again, I've seen some lovely (cleaner) emeralds shared here from other areas, which you may enjoy. So you'll have to take a look around and see where your preferences land. Remember, because beryl has such low density, you don't need a high carat weight to get good spread. Best of luck!

Same vendor, same price range, much less included but much smaller: https://jrcolombianemeralds.com/pro...erald-emerald-cut?_pos=1&_fid=12ecd10e8&_ss=c

I have not purchased a nice emerald myself so this is purely academic, but I find it instructive to look at a single vendor with a lot of stock, like JR, and see how carat, color, and clarity vary within the same price range to kind of 'train my eye'. That could help you determine your own priorities as well.

Zambian emeralds are cheaper but tend be less glowy than Colombian. However you can find ones that have more glow. Might be something you want to consider. Swat emeralds are nice too and also lower priced than Colombian. That said a glowy Colombian has its charms and is special in its own way so that’s what you might want to buy if you’re a collector.

I am a slave for size so went with Zambian.

I just purchased my first emerald and went through the same research. Prices are all over the place. I cared most about color and “lively” glow. I paid just a bit more than you’ve listed for a 1.41 ct muzo green emerald that I adore. It has inclusions that I think are cool looking when light hits them. Pics don’t do it justice, but I I’ll say the Colombian emeralds from the Muzo region (as mentioned in a post above) have something special about them!

Editing to add that shape, size, and cut will steer your shopping. I wanted certain shape and ratio, and options are limited compared to diamonds that I’m used to shopping for.

I bought mine through gemstock. Check out their website; I liked their inventory.

Love the ring... love the earrings... but again, I have to tell you those are some of the finest pearls I've ever seen. Mikimoto, correct? :kiss2:

Yay, what fun! It took me a long time before I bought my first emerald. I agree with @Autumn in New England about the price and size. I own only two Colombian, Muzo Green emeralds. You can see them on this thread.https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-new-vivid-green-muzo-emerald-ring.277080/post-5214355
I agree with @newtojewels about training your perception of emeralds . You can see which kinds of green you like!
If you want a big emerald. then do what @mellowyellowgirl did and go for a Zambian stone. Some of them have a foil-like metallic sheen that is quite interesting.
Re: vendors, try Gemfactor Emeralds. I haven’t never bought from them because I prefer to view emeralds in a person. They are very nice and responsive. Their stones seem to be quite reasonably priced.
They are at the Singapore International Jewellery Exhibition this week, so I’m really excited to see their emeralds! I shall send you some photos if I manage to visit the show.
Enjoy the hunt, @DotDot

Yes after vowing that I would not spend money on brands, I fell in love and had no choice. In my defence I haven’t seen anything similar to it that I can easily access. So it was prudent I say!!!

@Crimson was going to log on and ask you about the jewellery fair! Please take lots of pics and start a thread! Look for a big pink and see how many are available for me!!!! I want to feel that my hard work was not in vain!

OK, I shall try! I still have so much work to finish before I fly to the land of the midnight sun… but I think I can squeeze in a mental health break at the fair :lol-2:
I think it will be easy to find a big pink tourmaline or rubellite, but pink sapphire? Probably not. Looking at my photos from a couple of years ago…
First pic: a big pink pad at the back and a smaller one near the front.. The emeralds are very nice in this photo. The centre one is from Colombia.
Second pic: Zambian emerald suite; several big blues, but no big pink.

I would recommend talking to Vanesa at GemFactor Emeralds and George Smith from muzoemeralds. I have purchased multiple emeralds from both vendors that I’ve been thrilled with. I think these two vendors give great quality for the money and they usually have reputable certs for the emeralds. For your budget, you could get around 3 ct, minor oil if you go a little lighter in color like a saturated medium shade. For vivid color, probably 1-1.5 ct with these vendors for a high quality stone. When I first started my emerald journey, I bought a few pieces from JR Colombian emeralds. In my opinion, the value for money isn’t as good with them. They only have certificates for some of their most expensive emeralds (usually around 20k+), and they don’t specify the degree of oil treatment for most of their emeralds. The emeralds that I have from muzoemeralds and GemFactor all have reputable certs and better color as well.
