Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and information re looking for an emerald. I took a punt and decided to purchase a ring from ebay. This ring was originally purchased by seller from an antique jewellery store in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia (where funnily enough I have holidayed at for about 30 years!)

I received the ring ( i was very nervous about the postage but we insured it and it arrived safely). I then took it into a wonderful jeweller in Brisbane city who specialise in antique and estate pieces, and who are licensed valuers, graduate gemmologists and gem merchants.

I decided not to tell them the story at the beginning, as I wanted them to tell me what they knew from a thorough look at the ring.

They commented that it was a beautiful natural Colombian emerald with only very minor inclusions. Set in platinum and yellow gold. Its a 2.36 carat emerald and funnily enough its my finger size too. They commented that it was beautifully made.

I was then told that they would recommend insuring this piece at between $7000 and $9000AUD, at this point I gave them the original valuation which states $7500 on it as a retail replacement figure and I felt so happy that two independent jewellers were both on the exact same page in terms of price, what it was and the quality.

He asked me what I paid for it, which is $1500AUD (negotiated from $2200) and he actually looked stunned, and told me Id done very well, congratulations. He said not to wear it every day as its a bit softer than a diamond but he thought overall that it was a wonderful piece.

This is a gift from my husband for completing my Accounting degree (will be finished in February) so now I must get back to study to I can get the ring on my finger!

Thanks for reading my feel good story!!

WoooHooo, how cool is that!!!! Isabella's has really nice mostly top of the line things (I assume that is where it came from originally) did Ken appraise it for you? Well done, it's beautiful.

Great buy, lovely ring, congratulations on the ring and your upcoming graduation. :-)

Good for you! That is a gorgeous ring - a beautiful color emerald. Nicely done.

Nice nice!! Well done on the purchase and your accounting degree!

Congratulations! That is a very pretty ring!!

Congratulations! It looks perfect on you!

They are correct that emeralds are much more fragile so do be careful when you wear it, but the bezel should protect it pretty well. Don’t clean your emeralds with anything but warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Heat and chemicals can ruin an emerald’s luster and beauty.

Congratulations! A beautiful ring for an amazing price!

I have a Columbian emerald in a bezel setting and I used to wear it a lot. There are now two nicks on the edge of the table of the stone, so I agree with the advice not to wear it everyday, but perhaps you are easier on your rings than me.

Thanks everyone for your lovely complilents. In terms of cleaning,etc... The bezel and surrounding metal is platinum, how do I go about polishing this (if it were white gold Id rhodium plate it for example?) and then is there a risk to the emerald in doing this?

If I wanted to dip the yellow gold band in rhodium to make it white gold could I?

What a wonderful way to memorialize such a significant event! It is beautiful, and I hope you feel pride in yourself every time you see it.

I wouldn't do this with a set emerald, and even if you did, it would quickly wear off. It's not worth it.

Beautiful ring!

What a nice statement piece...isn't it wonderful to find the ring you want in your price range? You can stare at it while you study :)

This is such a perfect colour for me! Congratulations!

Thanks! I love the colour!! The estate aspect is an added bonus !!!

Beautiful color! Congrats on an amazing find and trusting your instincts!
