Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and information re looking for an emerald. I took a punt and decided to purchase a ring from ebay. This ring was originally purchased by seller from an antique jewellery store in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland Australia (where funnily enough I have holidayed at for about 30 years!)
I received the ring ( i was very nervous about the postage but we insured it and it arrived safely). I then took it into a wonderful jeweller in Brisbane city who specialise in antique and estate pieces, and who are licensed valuers, graduate gemmologists and gem merchants.
I decided not to tell them the story at the beginning, as I wanted them to tell me what they knew from a thorough look at the ring.
They commented that it was a beautiful natural Colombian emerald with only very minor inclusions. Set in platinum and yellow gold. Its a 2.36 carat emerald and funnily enough its my finger size too. They commented that it was beautifully made.
I was then told that they would recommend insuring this piece at between $7000 and $9000AUD, at this point I gave them the original valuation which states $7500 on it as a retail replacement figure and I felt so happy that two independent jewellers were both on the exact same page in terms of price, what it was and the quality.
He asked me what I paid for it, which is $1500AUD (negotiated from $2200) and he actually looked stunned, and told me Id done very well, congratulations. He said not to wear it every day as its a bit softer than a diamond but he thought overall that it was a wonderful piece.
This is a gift from my husband for completing my Accounting degree (will be finished in February) so now I must get back to study to I can get the ring on my finger!
Thanks for reading my feel good story!!
