I stopped into one of my favorite antique stores today that has a fantastic selection of estate jewelry. I am not in the market for an emerald, I’m usually not even drawn to them, but they had the cleanest emerald I’ve ever seen. I asked the sweet ladies working the counter if it was a lab emerald, it’s that eye clean. I couldn’t get very good pictures of it. The store is kind of dark and the glow just would not come across, but I’ll attach what I have. They had an appraisal which matches the GIA report that that owner had at home. I’d definitely want to see it myself before I purchase, just to be sure everything matches.

I have no idea what a fair price is for an emerald. The insurance appraisal was for $12k, they had it listed for $8k but we’re willing to take $6,500. Is this reasonable based on the specs?

“Undergone industry standard treatment”
meaning...
F1,F2, F3?

Did you loupe it to check surface fissures?

7+mm depth seems to be deep?

Look up the GIA report and post it here.

Are you sure it’s that clean? It looks dirty or sleepy. I see smudges on the table.

I think it’s dirty. A lot of people have probably tried her on.

You really need to see the GIA report, but if it’s as nice as you say, the emerald is a good buy. You should find out the degree of clarity enhancement. The GIA report would say so. Very odd it’s not there with the gem.

I’m going to stop back in the store on Monday and get it from the owner. She didn’t have it with her which is good because it gives me time to think it over.

It’s almost too cheap if it’s as nice as you say, and it’s a thousand a carat with a free diamond and gold setting. It looks really nice, but look at it outside too.

My other worry is that it’s a doublet, so examine the stone from the side, and definitely get that GIA report. The clarity, color and price are too good to be true.

I'm puzzled by the fact that the appraisal makes no mention of the GIA lab report. Why would someone have an insurance appraisal done which does not incorporate that significant feature of the emerald; the lab report's findings are more important than the guesstimates of whoever did the appraisal; also, GIA doesn't assign a cut grade to oval, D-to-Z diamonds -- or any colored gem (including colored diamonds) of whatever shape
https://www.gia.edu/gem-lab-colored-diamond-grading-report-compare
https://www.gia.edu/gem-lab-colored-stone-report-compare
-- so the appraiser's statement that emerald's "overall cut is Good (by GIA cut grading system)" is something they pulled out of their hat o_O

Thank you all for your help! I went to go look at the GIA cert today and someone beat me to it. Some lucky lady came in this morning and bought two ruby rings and this emerald. Talk about living your best life! I never ask jewelers to put a piece on hold. I'd hate for them to lose a sale because I'm hem hawing around. This one wasn't meant to be. Thank you all again for your input, you ladies know your stuff!

To be honest, it’s so odd the GIA report never came with it, and who charges $1k/ct for an eye clean deep green six carat emerald with a free diamond and gold setting?? It was too good to be true. Maybe that other buyer saved you from heartache, or there was no GIA report after all?

I agree. I think this one wasn’t meant to be. The prices at this particular store are usually fantastic, but something felt a little off with this piece.
