I have a question about emerald. I bought an emerald and diamond ring from Prestons Ltd in 1990 in Bolton in Lancashire, England. Prestons Ltd / Preston and Duckworth

Managing Director - Neil Duckworth

The emerald is an emerald cut emerald and there is 14x0.05 approx diamonds around it and 4x0.05 approx diamonds on the shanks - total diamond weight is 0.92 G SI1. The ring was bought for £6800 and is set in 18 carat gold.

The emerald is 1.12 carat and is a beautiful green, I do not know where from. Anyway I phoned up the store some years later to ask about the emerald but the manager said it just had the size of the emerald which had been sold to me in their records. She said emerald would be oiled as that is routine with all emeralds.

At todays rate that is £6800 x 1.83 = $12,444.

The emerald has a very slight cavity to the very very edge of the table and therefore I believe it is not filled with anything. I said to the manager that I thought the ring was very expensive since educating myself more and the answer I got was that I should take it to an appraiser. Well I do not want to spend a lot of money upon an appraiser as I feel I have overpaid on this before and I know in the UK most appraisers take a percentage of the value of the item, so I do not want to do this.

The question is, not really knowing what I have here (I know), would this have been a very inflated price for a 1.12 carat emerald back in 1990? Preston & Duckworth are a retail chain in the North of England, Bolton in Lancashire is the town the store is in. I have been told they are a prestigious jeweller = whatever that means. At the time the ring was purchased they were called Prestons Ltd.

I know this is a very vague question as I do not have an appraisal with the ring but any answer or thoughts would be welcome.

(I know know to get an appraisal done before making a large purchase like this and will do in the future).

wow, I never knew all this.

Ah... the good old English jewelry and its pricetags. It does sound expensive, but how much there is no way to tell for sure without the respective appraisal. One could start to second guess, but the exercise really is not worth much. Not that no emerald would come close, it may well be the case, or entirely not.

As far as I know, the chip is no proof of enhancement or lack of. It may have been there or it may be acquired through wear regardless of the enhancement status.

Just my 0.2, as usual. I am sorry to hear about your dissapointment with the ring...

Thanks Valeria101. I am not disappointed with the ring just feel that it was expensive, it still looks like a better emerald than 90% of those I have seen in jewellers around here.

The cavity was on the emerald when I bought it, as I remember seeing that at the time. I know what you are saying though as it could have been done between polishing and setting or even in the display case in the shop.

I do not have any pics if I did I would try to post them. It is a very dark green and I can see some blue in it and it seems to compare with colors I have seen on websites as being a top colour/tone/hue etc.

The cavity? is on the crown near to the table and looks like a cavity = it has rounded corners and is not jagged as far as I can see. There are other white little inclusions or pinpoints (if they exist in emerald) around the area where the cavity is inside the emerald.

Are you planning on selling your ring, or having it insured? If so, you may need to have it appraised, because simply having a receipt and address from a store is not going to be sufficient for determining value.
If not, and are simply interested in knowing what its value is, it does not seem the information you have given would be enough for the experts to give any kind of opinion. You still probably need to have someone evaluate it in person to know the quality of the emerald, diamonds, and setting. It would be nice to see a picture too!

No I do not intend to ever sell the ring. It is still beautiful to me. I think I was just jaded and thought that a ring costing $12,000 should be perfect. I will not spend money to get an appraisal as it is bought now.

If you do not want to sell it, then simply enjoy it! I''m sure it is beautiful because you would not have bought it in the first place if it wasn''t. Do not feel the fact the company who sold it to you is going out of business make you feel badly on your ring. The jewelry business is a very competitive and changing business; there are many reasons why a business might not make it, the least being the quality of their goods. As far as whether your emerald was treated, 95% of all emeralds are treated so it would be conservative to assume it was unless you have a certificate that says otherwise. However, that should not detract from the beauty of the piece.
