Emerald hunt
I am trying to find an emerald that is about .4-.47 carrots that has the proper dimensions on the cut most importantly. Color can be as low as I and clarity can be as low SI2. I found this but I don’t think the cut is right.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Eric

Don''t forget that cut alone is going to be useless if there''s a bothersome, visible inclusion.

I don''t recommend SI with step cuts as those show inclusions very easily. You might get lucky with an SI1 but it''s pretty rare.

The other thing is BN does not provide you an actual picture. With a fancy cut like an EC, I''d like to be able to see the stone before spending money on shipping.

Hey thanks for the info about the clarity, I would like to spend under $900. I live decently close to where Blue Nile is located would it be worth it to go there?

Thanks, ERic

I''m not sure if BN accepts appointments with people to their location. Do ask because I don''t think they have an office where they will sell in person, hence their low overhead = low cost. Also, even if you see an EC in person, do you know what to look for in a great stone and in a poor stone? Having an idealscope and looking at MANY ECs will help train your eyes to pick the right one. Sorry to be a downer. Especially with only $900 budget, it''ll be tough. Let me go see what I can find.

0.41 carats, G SI1 for $544 with the Pricescope discount

With WF, they will do a sarin scan to get the crown height (crucial information with BN does not provide), take a real magnified picture of the stone (to check the pattern and inclusions) and Idealscope picture (to check light leakage).

If you''re buying locally, or just trying to figure out what you like, I''d suggest you go to your nearest Tiffany and ask them to show you some gorgeous ECs over 1 carat. I''m not suggesting you buy from Tiffany, but you probably have one near you and you''re unlikely to see an ugly EC there. Take the ECs, look at them as close to the window as you can (as opposed to under their gorgeous lighting), hold them under the counter, and see how they reacts to different light. Ask them for the specs. Note them.

THEN, you probably can find a chain jewelry store in the same area. Go there, take a look at their ECs, see if you can tell a difference, and note *those* specs.

Especially note the different effects of table size and depth, higher vs. lower color, different grades of clarity. That way you can get a better sense of what you can live with.
