Hi All-

I have been looking around on PS for the past 6 months or so just to gte my feet wet before purchasing a diamond for an engagement ring. I figured what better time than now to ask for advice!

I am looking for an emerald cut diamond about 1.5 ct. I am looksing to spend between $7500 and $9000 for the diamond, and a L/W ratio of somewhere around 1.4 or so.

I was looking today, and found this one:

http://www.solomonbrothers.com/DiamondDetail.aspx?sku=35Y4363Y&affiliate=9318613A-AD0C-4530-A456-0409DFEFB8DE

It appears that the same exact diamond is for sale by 3 or 4 other sellers on PS, but they are all more expensive.

First of all, what are your thoughts in general on the diamond? It seems like a nice one without looking at it, but obviously there is the naggin worry that there is a big chip in the middle or something :)

Also, what do you know about Solomon Brothers that might be helpful? I feel stupid paying $300-$400 more for the exact same stone unless there is good reason.

Thanks!

Welcome!

The thing is with EC's as with other fancy shapes, you can't tell by the numbers whether it will be a well cut stone or not, and cut quality is so important if you are to end up with a lovely stone. So you need to ask the vendor to provide at least detailed photographs and preferably Idealscope if ASET isn't available. Also SI clarity in an emerald cut may not be eyeclean - again you would need the vendor to physically examine the diamond to tell you - but it may be best to stick to VS clarity or higher in step cuts as these shapes show inclusions more readily.

Also if a diamond is advertised with multiple vendors, it is likely to be a diamond which needs to be called in to the vendor you choose. It can be advantageous to work with a vendor who has in house diamonds and all the info available, I would ask Solomans if they have any in house emerald cuts they can suggest, as I am not too familiar with this vendor.
