Hey everyone,

New here! I'm purchasing an emerald halo from James Allen-- I just put in the order but now I'm second guessing myself on the stone!-- Any comments on this stone? I wanted to stay at a budget in the lower $3000 and clarity and color were important to me. I also tend to like more rectangular stones. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi pk! Glad you posted, as I think you can do a lot better on the cut of your center stone. That one looks like it'll have a lot of obstruction issues.

Hopefully someone who knows emerald cuts well (calling Gypsy!) will be in with suggestions, but I can take a look and see if anything stands out.

Yikes you can do better. I am not at home right now though will look later. For now, stop the order.

Thank you Gypsy and Woofmama. I am checking those out. What exactly am I looking for, in a well-cut emerald, when I am watching the videos?

Woofmomma picked winners. I could write you an essay on what to look for. But I can summarize it with... the opposite of the stone you bought. See all those dead black facets in your stone? You want ones that are bright and flash on and off and show life.

I like this one Woofmomma chose for perfomancd: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/0.90-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-sku-704013 but this one is MUCH larger: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/0.91-carat-i-color-if-clarity-sku-722648 and is lovely as well.
Remember diamonds are supposed to sparkle.

I just bought a J color emerald cut and had the same concern as you about the halo making it look tinted.

Here is a pic of the stone sitting in a ring with F color melee:

I think that the contrast is too much between the melee and centre stone. Having seen this I had my halo ring made with H/I color melee and apart from the contrast between the round brilliant cut melee and the emerald cut centre I see no real difference in color now between the melee and centre diamond.

The ring you are considering seems to have F/G color melee but you could ask JA to substitute it for H/I color melee to match an I color centre diamond.

Hope this helps you in your deliberations :)

E B-

The ring is for me. I'm upgrading from my original engagement ring which was a 0.3 ct round.

Any thoughts on these two stones? I like the I that woof mama and gypsy picked out, just trying to see if I can increased my dimensions or color for around the same price. Thanks in advance!

The 1st one you linked is also an I, has a very large table & very little crown. So that's a marginal diamond. It will look like cut glass & lack fire. If you are comfortable with an I, the one already linked was a much better choice. Here's the link again: http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/0.91-carat-i-color-if-clarity-sku-722648
Open the links of both I colored diamonds, look at the table & crown. See the difference?

The 2nd one you linked is better but my vote still goes to the G or H I linked primarily due to the lower crown on your pick.

I narrowed it down to this stone that woof mama and gypsy suggested:

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/0.90-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-sku-704013

I was wondering though if anyone know knows why it looks a little blurry/hazy when looking towards the center of the stone when it is facing up? As opposed to this stone where it looks really clear:

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/emerald-cut/0.90-carat-g-color-vs1-clarity-sku-848416

And thanks again to everyone for the advice so far!

I think it's just photography.

Both are nice.
See if they can get you an ASET for either.
