I was here 8 years ago as a young man with little money and this forum helped me greatly in my quest to understand Emerald Cuts! With your help I found a very nice 1.1 carat EC diamond for an engagement ring and have been happily married since. In those 8 years I have forgotten all of what I had learned, BUT I have larger budget now and am looking to upgrade. I've been browsing on the James Allen site but am struggling to understand the nuances or the images. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for the following for an upgrade engagement ring - either side stones or a thin pave setting.

3 carat
$40k budget
G or better
VS2 or better

I'll give you the short and sweet on Emerald cuts.

- Make sure the stone "steps" all the way down into the center. In some stones the center is dead. No to very little movement at all.
For example, this one is somewhat dead in the center

- Make sure there are not too many steps turned off/black at the same time. For example

- Make sure steps are of somewhat equal width and that two (or more) steps dont go on/off at the same time. For example
about 4 steps off at once

That's the short of it. The first one is really the one that most people dont realize...the other two most people do realize.
Pay attention to LxW because stones vary widely at the same carat weight.

Possibilities

This one is not too active in the center

I checked Bluenile but they only had one not so great stone in your specs/budget.

Edit...you could contact Diamonds by Lauren and see what he can find for you. He doesnt have anything that matches your specs at the
moment but I'm pretty sure he could find something.

@tyty333 this is so useful and illustrative! i love all your posts! =)2

Wow! Thank you tyty333! Incredibly helpful

Interesting the $10k difference between these two stones. The less expensive one has strong fluorescence - guess I should take a look and see if it is noticeable in natural light and if it bothers me

ask for the reports and see if they are doing aset again. post info.

No ASET for either James Allen stone.
