Is the table to big on this diamond? I still want some fire with my EC.

yes it is in my opinion.
It will be more of a traditional EC instead of a fiery one.

Strmrdr has is about right. It is not an unusually cut emerald shape, but probably not in the top reaches of what limited performance this cut can provide. Emerald cuts are generally desired for folks who prefer a subtle look instead of a flashy diamond. This cut might be fine for the personality of the recipient. I would assume you have already consulted with the future recipient to be sure you are headed in the right direction.

When you refer to Traditional = do you mean Glassy?

Is the trend these days to go with Emerald Cuts that are more fiery or a blend of traditional and fiery?

Most people on PS want a stone that ''performs'' well, so that would mean an EC with scintillation (sparkle) and fire (colored flashes). Fire comes from a higher crown and smaller table.

If you can see the diamond in person then so much the better, but if it is with an online vendor, ask for pictures and an ASET image, to see if you can get an idea if this is the type of EC you like.

Oldminer - yes I definitely have consulted with the recipient. Each setting that we looked at had a Emerald cut CZ for show. I''ve considered radiant cuts as a compromise (since she likes the look of on an Ascher cut, but she always picks settings that feature Emerald cuts.

To give an example of the setting, attached is someone''s ring I''ve seen posted around here.

haha...wow! that is my ring! Holy thanks for the compliment! I happen to adore my setting as well...in fact I have never fallen for another halo setting quite like I have this one.

What''s funny is I was going to mention that my EC has a table of...I think 71 or 72, and a low crown. So as compared to the more "modern" or "fiery" EC''s I suppose mine has more of a subtle look. But what I do love about it is that it was cut to maximize spread and so it appears pretty large for it''s 0.90ct size. Not to mention that I do find it plenty flashy and sparkley for my taste. Large table or no, I absolutely LOVE my diamond!

74% Table is too large for me (but you''re not buying this for me, are you???).

The problem for me is that that, all other things being equal, the steps tend to be more ''crunched'' when the table is larger. In other words, there is less definition. And yes, less sparkle.

I found this table really useful and it shows some of the guidelines that I used for my EC:

As you can see, 60-66% is best for an EC Table; a couple of percent higher or lower is still very good.

It also suggests parameters for Depth, Crown Height, Girdle, etc.
