I am in the market of an emerald cut diamond. I know that my honey likes the L/W ratio around 1.35 and I would like to have the high end (VG) of symmetry, polish and cut. I have found a diamond and was curious your thoughts (price around 6700). I am also wanting to know the difference between a G color and D-F color when set in a platinum setting. Thanks in advance for all your advice.

Carat weight: 1.19
Cut: Very Good
Color: G
Clarity: VS1
Depth %: 65.8%
Table %: 63%
Symmetry: Very good
Polish: Very good
Girdle: Medium to thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 7.13 x 5.24 x 3.45 mm
Length/width ratio: 1.36

I actually found another one - but color is E and is about 5200 (instead of 6700). Table is a little large. Any thoughts on these 2 diamonds?

Carat weight: 1.11
Cut: Very Good
Color: E
Clarity: VS1
Depth %: 63.6%
Table %: 70%
Symmetry: Good
Polish: Very good
Girdle: Slightly thick to thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 7.08 x 5.17 x 3.29 mm
Length/width ratio: 1.37

Have you seen the stone? What do you think of it? The cut could be very pleasing but you have to see it. Two stones with the stats you gave could look very different from each other depending on their cuts.

As for color I think it would be fine set in plat. You won''t be able to tell that it''s not D-F unless you hold it up to a D stone. But EC do show more color so check it out and compare it to other stones to be sure that YOU really like the look.

Thanks for a quick reply. Currently the diamonds are virtual and I have to see them in person. Any thoughts on Symmetry between ''Good'' and ''Very Good'' on a Very Good cut stone.

To my eyes, even when the stones are NOT next to each other, I can tell the difference between an E and a G coloured EC. I upgraded from a G EC to a E EC. The G was white but the E is more of an icy white. Maybe I am more colour sensitive. This is an individual thing but both will look great in a Platinum setting.

As for the stone themselves, EC #1 has promise. What is the crown height of the stone? Do you have an Idealscope picture? I don't like the 70% table on EC#2. Again, what is the crown height of the stone and do you have an Idealscope picture? Crown height is important because it determines how much life and fire the EC will have. You typically want to aim for crown height above 10% but I prefer at least 12% and upwards. Anything under 10% will have the EC looking dull and lifeless.

Have you seen both stones in person? What does the step pattern look like? Does it have large black areas or does the black and white areas alternate in thin steps like zebra stripes? All this cannot be determined without pictures or seeing the stones.

As for symmetry and polish - they do not make the stone ideal or sparkle more. Symmetry is important in step cuts, you don't want the steps to be skewed. A VG Polish shows that the cutter took his time and put more effort to "finish" the stone. A VG VG for polish and symmetry is a good thing to have.

Good symmetry in a step cut is usually not a good thing at all. I don''t like the table, it will probably result in a lower crown height... I would pass on the E.

That G you''ve got there, from the numbers (you REALLY need to see it) look very promising.

When I went and actually looked at the same cuts side by side I could see a difference between the Good Sym and the Very Good Sym. My husband could too. Now maybe you won''t but like someone said in a step cut Sym is very important.

Because we all see Sym and color differently we really have to look at the stones to know what we''ll like. I think on a 2nd or 3rd well informed diamond purchase it would be easier. Now I know I need VG sym and I''m not too color sensitive as long as it has Fluor. As everyone here knows 2nd and 3rd well informed purchases are recommended for continued happiness.

All these measurements are GIA, I am currently trying to get the brown heighth and will reply when/if they send it.

Thanks again for all you current and future advice.

OK, One last stone that I think may be the one.

Carat weight: 1.07
Cut: Very Good
Color: E
Clarity: VS2
Depth %: 63.5%
Table %: 63%
Symmetry: Very good
Polish: Very good
Girdle: Slightly thick to thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 6.84 x 5.10 x 3.24 mm
Length/width ratio: 1.34

Crown Heighth: 11.8

Do not have an idealscope and have not seen in person, but from what I can see from measurments (GIA) this looks like a promising stone. Any thoughts?

From the numbers it looks great. My favorite of your picks. It's 5 by 7 has the same spread as the G but with higher color... not too skinny at all. I think it has great potential. Can they vendor at least provide some magnified pics?
