So I was at Hannoush the other day just to see what they have and found a 1.5 with EGL usa certificate rated ideal plus(HCA .6)Polish and symmetry VG/VG. I already bought an ACA (I haven''t gotten it yet)and I am sure I will be very happy with it but I was curious as to how accurate this lab is. The hannoush diamond seemed like a really reasonable deal(for a B&M). I have got mixed reviews from this site on EGL-USA and most of the posts are old and outdated. Do you actually think this diamond could compare to the ACA, what other factors could effect the light performance of the stone....BTW both diamonds I SI1 and negligible flour. IDK the diamond looked nice but of course it did it was under the bright halogen bulbs...What you guys think!!!

Go visit the store again when you get the ACA? :p

EGL-USA supposedly more accurate that the other EGL lab so might be worth the check out. Maybe not a H&A as the ACA, but that might not be a issue.

My feeling is that this diamond will not compare to an ACA, also this link explains how the grading labs rank.

If I am not mistaken, EGL doesn''t even give you the all important crown and pavilion angles in their reports. Crown and Pavilion percentages are not as accurate in the HCA. So, how can one really get a good evaluation on an EGL graded stone?
Their reputation is: "soft" on the more subjective areas like color and clarity. It makes no sense to me to give less objective information which should lend more credibility (and usefulness) to their reports.
There are tons of stones out there with EGL gradings and they don''t seem poised to go out of business anytime soon. That tells me they MUST be serving a viable niche in the market. My guess is... in grading stones that need all the help they can get to appear favorable to an uneducated consumer. To take it a step further, I seriously doubt a cutting house is going to send their very best stones off to EGL for grading.

The EGL-USA standards for ‘ideal plus’ are not published as far as I know but it’s clear from looking at stones that they’ve graded that they are considerably broader than those used by AGS (All ACA stones are AGS graded as ‘ideal’) or even those used by GIA for their top grade of ''excellent''. The same is also true of both their clarity and color grades. It is common to see discrepancies over the boundaries between SI1 and SI2, I and J, etc. Even though the names of most of the grades are the same, the labs are NOT using the same grading scales and they don’t apply their scales in the same ways. A rose may be a rose by any other name but ''ideal'' may mean something completely different.

Neil, I wouldn''t have mentioned except for your note...

Seems for the longest time, it''s been asked, and no one answered this question...what are EGL''s standards. Near the same time you say they''re not published, I noticed recently that on the Diamond Source site, they post them here. I have no idea what their source is...

That’s certainly what I’m looking for and the Diamond Source folks are a credible enough source but I’ve sure not seen anything like that from any EGL-USA publication and I’ve specifically looked and even asked the staff about it. It makes me wonder where they got it. Here’s what EGL-USA has to say on their own site about their cut grading.
