EGL Isreal Unbelievable

I purchased a 1.75 Round VS2, D, Ideal, EX, EX, LAST WEEK FOR 16,000 thinking I got a great deal. I took the stone to get looked at by George Houghtal currently the 4th highest ranking GIA Graduate in the US. All of a sudden my D stone is looking to be a G, SI1. The cert claimed to an ideal cut,EX,EX well the stone had an extra facet. How can the stone be ideal with an extra facet. I can not believe the EGL grading system.

Even though George is a GIA graduate he recommended I look for a stone with a AGS cert. He believes they have become alot stricter in the last year and grade cut, symetry, and proporations much stricter than all others.

I would agree with him.
I think gia grading is still in the acceptable range by industry standards but its clear ags is the slightly stricter lab and provides more information.
One fancies and rounds with more information avaiable from a good vendor im ok with GIA certs but if all thats avaiable is a cert then ags all the way.

Would you look for AGS G/Si1 then? If this didn''t look tinted and included to you...

Even with the price being ok (which I don''t knwow if it was the case in your case, but sometimes this is used as a silly excuse for missrepresentation

- this is why I mention), I can''t help but feeling cheated with such info. Even if the stone was not bad in itself, the certification issue surely turned to picture sauer & sad

Did you get to compare that with a more realistic D color or ideal cut at the appraiser as well ?

Ouch, Garry!!!! Didn't see that one.... now that some funny sort of credentials allright.

Did the appraiser present himself with those words? Are they written on paper (e.g. advertisement, business card, anything you have seen in the store) like that !??

Very interesting. "Fourth highest ranking gemologist".....Never knew they ranked any of us. Maybe it is a matter of where our photos are placed at the post office on the Most Wanted

listings or something.

I have heard of a "rank bull" at the rodeo. I have had some "rank food" when I wank in the Army. I have smelled some "rank odors" at the porta potty. But, I have never thought I had been "ranked" myself.

Something rank is in the air...

EGL graded the diamond "D" and gemologist says "G"? Are you sure about that?

I''m not saying EGL is great, but to be off three grades is very unusual. Possible - yes, but unlikely.

I had an EGL H-VS1 in the office yesterday. The stone would have probably graded I-VS2 from GIA but certainly not "K"!

As to your extra facet question, I don''t think an extra facet would preclude the diamond from being Ideal. I guess it would just really depend on the size and location of the extra facet. If it was very small and located on the underside of the girdle it''s not such a big deal.

Please tell us more about that, and of course when you receive it, the actual grade assigned by the AGS to this stone.

Although I have a generally favorable opinion of EGL-USA's grading, my opinion of EGL-Israel's grading is........less than favorable.

It is my opinion that labs like EGL Isreal are largly responsible for "legitimized" misrepresentation. We reap what we sew. The consumer has been programed by us (the trade) to be untrusting of the trade. Many have forced diamonds into becomming a commodity and are scared of the consequence yet continue to mislead the consumer in the name of doing business. Can''t you just smell the irony?

Lukasp. There is no"ranking" of gemologists that is recognized or accepted by the trade. Period. I don''t recommend that you necessarily have to have an AGS cert or any other for that matter. A grade doesn''t need to be "strict", just accurate.

GIA ranks GG by their age. so.....
