EGL cert ?

Hi,

I was wondering if it is still a bad idea to buy an EGL certified diamond if you have a sarin report, ideal scope image and an inependent appraisal and they confirm the EGL certificate. Can an EGL diamond be as good as a GIA or AGS diamond? It seems that a lot of people do not like EGL, but why would it be bad if it''s confirmed? EGL diamonds seem less expensive so they are tempting. Also, if a diamond is EGL certified can one get the diamond certified GIA after purchase? Thanks!

People do not like EGL because they have a reputation to be very relaxed on the grading (A stone graded F VS2 by EGL could come back H SI1 if sent to GIA).
That being said, if you have had the stone independently appraised and are happy with the results AND you have a Sarin report to verify a cut you are happy with - BUY IT!

I don''t think it''s a bad idea at all, particularly if you have all of this supporting evidence on the diamond in question.

Uh - yes of course. A diamond is a diamond. Whether the grading will be the same...another story.

Yes, you can have it GIA certified - if you want to spend the money.

Make sure if you have it inspected by an independent appraiser they grade it wouthout looking at the EGL report. It is very easy to be biased.....Cindy

it''s not necessarily a bad idea, as long as you aren''t paying a premium for the stone.

they can be as good, but the color/clarity may not be as strict. for instance, an egl graded d/vs might be a gia/ags f/si. since you are paying a premium for d/vs, the stone with the egl report should not be priced the same as a gia/ags d/vs.

yes, you can have any diamond graded by gia. don''t forget to factor in the costs involved and the possibility of the stone coming back with lower color/clarity which would decrease the overall value.

The entire point of having a cert is to confirm you''re getting what you''re paying for, so if you''ve gotten an independent appraisal and all your other evaluations point to a great stone, then it doesn''t matter if you have an EGL, GIA, AGS, or no cert (unless it becomes a factor later if you want to sell).

Thanks everyone for your input. My main concern was that lesser stones are sent to EGL so that they get a better certificate. I guess that doesn''t matter as long as the stone turns out to be good. On that note, if a stone has a great cut, why wouldn''t everyone just send their stones to AGS and get a higher quality certificate? Thanks again for all your help!

They are not higher quality..., please take into consideration ALL grades are based on "OPINION" only...

I have seen GIA certs with higher grades than other certs, among them EGL.

I know quite a lot of fine professional diamond manufacturers who only certify their production with other labs (not GIA or AGS).
