I want to buy a loose round diamond, and get it casted later (in my native country with some special design).

for the time being, I need it to be set in a simple gold pendant. what would be an economic way to set it, and how much would it cost approximately?

The cheapest settings used for ron-of-the mill colored stones can easily be purchased for $50 (this not to cite some weird prices half that) and I would not expect a significant charge for setting anything in one of those. Such items are to be found in the range of "jewelry findings" or such on the web, but I would not go for it since it is quite a pain to get the right size, etc. Most jewelers who perform alot maintainance services wold do this job nicely. These inexpensive settings should be secure for what you want.
