I may have hit a new peak in my collection of odd things: a bishop's ring! It sparkled up at me at the local flea market and I couldn't resist. I'm positive it's amethyst, not pressed glass or something ( the back is faceted), but, oddly enough, the ring itself is silver ... to the best of my knowledge, these were almost always gold. I don't know how old it is, or who it belonged to originally, but I'm certainly appreciative of the craftsmanship that went into its creation as well as its symbolism!
Do any of you guys know anything about ecclesiastical rings? My guess is that it's 19th c. - earlier and the carving would have been reversed so it could be used as a stamp, later and I doubt a gem requiring this level of skill for the custom cutting would be set in silver - but that's purely a hunch. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
