I know "cut is king" in modern round brilliants but when it come to the older cuts like transitional and european cuts on apprasials that is all that is listed for the cut grade. Obviously I know the older cuts can be cut well and cut poorly, so my question is since there is not a cut grade for older cuts such as good, very good, excellent or ideal how can you determine if the cut is good on an older cut if you can''t see the diamond in person? Or am I wrong that there is a cut grade other than just stating ec or tc? Just stumped on that one, any input would be great!

Hi Shine

There are various different proportion configurations which can produce a great looking diamond of these types, but with these and any other diamond, don't go by labels such as Excellent, Very Good etc as these are no guarantee of a well cut stone.

If shopping online, then you need to work with a vendor that either has the stone in house and can provide images such as ASET, Idealscope and detailed photographs. Some online vendors that are passionate about cut quality will provide all these things and more in order to help the consumer make an informed choice.

With old cuts I would trust www.jewelsbyericagrace.com to source something for me, and then would send it to a trusted appraiser who knows old cuts and uses the techknowlegies we like on PS.

For an older cut I''d make sure I worked with someone super-familiar with them and who could also get me good pictures, as well as had a generous return policy in case it didn''t live up to expectations when I received it. Erica Grace is a good one, or Single Stone. Others have bought from Old World Diamonds.
